Default New car choices..

Hi Guys,

Thought I'd call of the collective scoobynet knowledge base for some help on a new car please.

My wife is expecting our first child on the 1st Feb next year

We need a new car for her, as she currently only has a Nissan Micra for taking into town to go shopping, as we live next to her work.

We also have two small dogs, which will need to go in the boot, so it's got to be a hatchback or estate. Added to that, she needs to be able to get the pushchair in the boot too. What we were thinking is being able to divide the boot into two with a cage like separator in the middle - one half for the dogs, the other for the pushchair, shopping etc.

Unfortunately, we are not super rich, so the budget for this car is only 5k, as it will be our second car.

We are looking for something that will provide the boot space above, as safe as possible, new as possible, and reliable as possible. We are not badge snobs, so feel free to recommend anything.

Top of the list so far is a Nissan Almera Tino. We can get a 2002/2003 reg one with around 25k on the clock for our budget. The 1.8 SE model, which comes with most toys, should be reliable as it's a Nissan, and has plenty of space.

Can anyone think of anything else to suggest please?

Thanks,

Steve

The Renault megan wins awards for safety in its class, its cheap to run and you can get a reasonable spec. for 5K. Not pretty maybe but cheap(ish), and 5K will get you a reasonably modern one.
hth.

Mondeo TDCi - but a bit on the large side possibly

Or as already mentioned Passats are great cars, however the Octavia will give you similair reliability and build quality but less badge presige if that is important in a second car? Additionally you will probably get a newer and better spec'd Octavia for the same money.

Travel for it then I've never understood why some peeps expact the 2nd hand car they want to be just around the corner in geographical terms.

I put in 60 mile radius in Autotrader. I don't really want to be travelling further than that to be honest.

I don't really understand people who class 60 miles away as round the corner, but there you go.

Thanks to the others for their replies. We looked at the Scenic, and do like it, but not sure in terms of Renault reliability.

Thanks Gary.

I was thinking that too, but don't know if she'll say it's too big. First time for everything!
