VAG oil,This might help,
Seriously though, Halfords now do a VAG diesel spec oil, was on offer a while back at sixteen quid for 5 litres, check the back of the bottle as it lists the specs, was going to get a few in but couldnt be bothered carrying it and they have the offer a couple of times a year.
Not worth using anything else on these, the injector pressure is build by and extra cam lobe that pressurises the oil to the high numbers required, this is quite hard on the oil at a molecular level and it stops doing its job so well, the lobes wear and deposit swarf into the oil system which grinds the main bearings down (and other bits) and means you need a new engine 40,000 mils later.
Could do with Simon the Oilman commenting, the above might be bollocks but it sounds plausible.
Dont know how good the Halfords stuff is, used Mobil for ours last time but if they say it meets the spec it should be ok, again, hopefully Simon might turn up to tell me if I am talking crap !

Jacko is dead right, the highest stress point on ANY 4-stroke engine is at the tip of the cam lobe where it rubs against the cam follower or bucket.
This is why Honda f**ked up badly with their V4 750 bike engine in the 80s, the cam lobes were too high-lift for the surface area of the cam face, which meant the friction & stresses scraped the oil film away and wore through the hardened face in a couple of thousand miles.
Because the extra cam lobe on the PDs has to generate 30,000psi in the injector, it's quite highly stressed so you have to use 505.01 or 506.01
I've found the cheapest, easily available PD oil is from my local Audi dealer, £10 per litre.

I got a litre of the VW 505.01 oil for my Seat tractor (PD130) for under a tenner from a Seat dealer recently. It used to come in a Seat/Audi/VW/Skoda branded bottle but this time it was Shell Helix.
Is longlife the 506.01 (IIRC)?
I've seen 5 litres of Motul 505.01 spec for around £25 on the web.

I'm sure we've had threads about VAG oil for the PD engines before 'cos that's what I've got. Do a search and/or go over to ukpassats.co.uk :: Index and search or the US one at Passat World Forums - Powered by vBulletin
and search. The question has been done to death on both.
Basically you need oil to VAG 505.01 spec. The cheapest I found when I did the last oil change was Millers - go to Millers Oils - A World Leader In Lubrication Technology and find your nearest supplier. You need the Millers XFE-PD - it's even easy to remember ....
See the flyer at: http://www.millersoils.net/literatur...ADS/XFE-PD.pdf
The web site even lets you find your nearest supplier ...
Enjoy!
