Been dabbling on ebay again and got...
This:
1980 350SE - very last of the W116 - 1960s design but 1970s tech(sort of). Creamy smooth V8 with a lovely roar even when just pulling away gently.
Clean as a whistle, 165k on her but running like a dream. Everything works (even the cruise control) and it even has a MB history to 110k.
Taxed, tested and had all its rust treated. It's even got the MBtex interior that's as hardy as any substance known to man.
The 15mpg it gives tends to hurt a bit.....

I've had older mercs than that one
This one's a baby at nearly 27 years old.

Nice old car, the sort that gave Mercedes their legendary build reputation unlike the modern mass production line stuff.

Definitely no cat!
I've got the one in the pic, a 1990 300E 24v Sportline, a 1982 280CE and a Saab 9000 2.0 high pressure turbo that I picked up today.

FP -- another Merc minter. Looks great for a 27-year-old!
On another tack, I saw a lovely L-reg (that's 1972, by the way ) Datsun 240Z, time-warp condition. Couldn't believe it until I spotted the faded, peeling yellow "Ziebart" sticker in the rear window. Some lucky punter got a great car there.

Only on petrol really.
Insurance is dirt cheap via Adrian Flux classic policies. The 350SE is only £85 per year - not bad considering it's a 205bhp (or was) and will still do 120mph. Parts are very cheap and still available.
I only tend to keep them until the tax/mot expires and then move them on at a profit - so it pays for itself, usually.
I bought the 116 above for next to nothing as the guy had 2 and was desperate to shift it. He'd spent 100s of man hours sorting the bodywork and interior and then more or less gave me it
