Looks decent for the money, but it won't feel quick (too smooth). Personally I'd have the 540i every time, quicker and the V8 sounds absolutely lush. Oh and get a manual too, the 540 comes with a 6-speed which is strong and has a nice change (although the throw is too long, but you get used to it).

Agreed, most of the market for 5 series are codgers who just want to get from A-B with as little effort as possible. The more enthusiastic drivers probably plumped for the M5, funds permitting.
However, there are still a fair number of 540i/6 around, you might just have to travel to get a good one, and they can command a premium if mint and the right spec.
You should try finding a good 6-speed manual 840Ci. I have one, but it wasn't until after I bought it I found out only 57 were manufactured in RHD worldwide. How many came to the UK, and how many have since been written off I have no idea, but I do know I was very lucky to have come across this one .

I've got a 528i for the wife, which I have had from virtually new.
Tried 540, and although it is nice, it is not a great deal quicker in the real world, but gets aprox 10mpg less. Also steap insurance.
I have the manual box and have done 100,000 miles in mine.
Quick and composed.
