How fast are these motors as my brothers friend has one and seems to think its the fastest thing on the planet and will easily keep beat vts's, 106 GTI's etc and keep up with Type-R's.

Not fast standard, but depending on how much you spend modding could well be one of the fastest things on the road. But mucho ££££££££££ is required.
it will need around 200-210bhp to stay with a Type R!

Standard they are ok, mid 7s to 60, mid range turbo puchiness, 158 odd bhp. throw some money at it and just like any 1.8t turns into a quickish straight line machine.
Handling was never brilliant though.

A friend bought a highly modded one a few months back, running around 250 bhp.
There's no doubt that it shifts but not like you'd imagine a relatively small car with that amount of power would (although it is full of subs and amps ).
It's not been free from problems either.
Don't know what they're like in standard form but my mates wouldn't embarrass a CTR, so wouldn't hold out that much hope

I had one a while ago and they are nice cars for the money. Wouldnt have called it fast - but then depends what your used to.
Needforspeed247 - Handling is pretty pants IMHO so I dont fancy its chances against any of the cars you listed in anything other than a straight line.

It will beat VTS's/106 gti's
It is a turbocharged car and has plenty of torque and a significant amount more power than VTS/106 gti.
As standard it wont keep with a CTR but spend £400-£500 on a remap and it will do. He's more than likely had the car remapped if it easily beats VTS's and keeps with CTR's.
Give it £5000 worth of mods and your then whipping most scoobies and even keeping up with tvr's/porsches/ferraris.
RR a member on here will tell you all about it, he has an IHI ibiza.
Buy the car for £5k and spend £5k on mods and for £10k you have 1 very fast car
But then you can spend £5000 on any car and it will go quicker, £5000 on a scooby and you've got a very fast car aswell.
