Default Mercedes CL

Morning,

I quite like the look and "drug dealer" image of the last Merc CL.

Probably a CL 500 on a 2001 plate.

Whilst big and luxury and very good in a staight line, what would it be like round a roundabout ?

I appreciate it is not 4 wheel drive, and caters for a completely different section of the market, but every now and then ………

Anybody owned one ?

Thanks

Del

I have a CL65 (Previously owned 2x S600s)

What do you need to know ?

I think ABC air suspension was an option on the 500s, which certainly helps handling.

Hustling on B-roads won't be as fast as an Impreza naturally, but still good fun.

Excellent luxury cars, and the CLs look great pillarless with the windows down.

Is yours restricted or dersitricted ?

These always fascinate me, so over engined and they have to reign it back in so it doesnt spit the gearbox out the bottom.

Currently restricted, but only owned it a few weeks. I know of quite a few people who have had theirs derestricted without any problems.

David your PM box is full

We currently have a Legacy B4, which is probably WRX fast, and am looking at either a CL500 - can't afford a bigger one, or Honda NSX.

What are they like for acceleration in relation to an Impreza ?

Whilst big can you drive swiftly over roundabouts ?

I presume other than a full service history, is there anything to look for ? I doubt much goes wrong with them

What are servicing costs like ?

I have seen one with white leather and a fridge between the back seats !! That was nice but more than the £20K or so that we wanted to spend.

The NSX is different and for that sort of money we are still looking at nearly 10 years old.

Thanks

In case anyone is interested, Bulldog Subaru Twyford have a CL500 for sale. Might give a decent trade-in on a Scoob too.

The one on the right has an even bigger engine (5.7) petrol - stick some straight through exhausts on and it will sound great.

handles like an Impreza as well - er thats not true, it handles like s*** if truth be known

Oh and 11mpg as well

I'm not sure of the CL500 acceleration, but the ML kept with an Evo 5 from a standing start for a good while, standing 1/4 is mid-high 14's iirc
