Default BMW 535D

Who here has one?

Good things/bad things?

What is the real mpg?

Is the 535D sport the same as 535 M sport?

Thanks

M-sport is the new name for sports. I tested one, but the ride was too crashy on UK roads. If you use the performance, expect low 20's MPG.

Anyone remember that thread with the 'banter' between a Scoob owner and a 535 D owner when they first came out, got a bit nasty iirc.

"Sport", "Diesel", "low 20s MPG" - does not compute. I always find it hilarious when people spend 30-40 grand on a diesel BMW to save money on petrol.

Deep,
I have had one for about a month now. It came with the 18" wheels with run flats which where ok for " normal" driving but for spirted driving they where no good so I swapped for normal 19" tyres (conti's) on the fab 19" rims which made the car look a lot better and handles way better. I have also the e-map re-map which transforms the car from a fast car to a stupid fast car.
The auto box is good but for me not having a auto before took a bit of getting used to but now I don't either think about it.
Also I found the car to begin with big and heavier than the other cars I've had but again after a few weeks it has now become the norm.
The power is absolutey mental, floor the gas and your in warp speed before you know it.
MPG on the motorway at 70 your lookign at 32 ish but hard driving more like 19 - 20 ish.
I find the ride ok even on b roads, obviously jumps are out of the question but you can still nail it round the corners and have much fun on most of the roads I usually fequent.
All in all it's proberbly the best package for "all round" driving you can smooch through town or blast down a b road. Motorway driving is really where the car excels though, you can accellerate from 80 to --- in seconds which no other car I've had could do. All in all fantastic.

Dont think its all about the economy, though 19/20 mpg is better than low teens/single figures.

Following on from Jacko's post, it does compute.

535D hits 60 in six seconds and does 155 limited.

Handles well, has massive torque and you won't do worse than 26 mpg unless driving it like you stole it - in which case a comparable petrol would be single figures/low teens. Significantly better on cruise

Contrast that with a similar performing petrol and you are looking at similar cost to buy and you'll be lucky if you ever see 26 mpg in the real world.

Edit to add,

a 535D M sport (auto) is £1,000 cheaper than a 540i MSport with Auto and although shown as 2/10 slower to 60, has massively more torque and will be faster in the real world as well as signifiantly more fuel efficient.

Thanks guys. The only negative thing I seem to read about this car is the crashy ride, shame as you'd think BM would get it right.

Also standard spec isn't quite as good as you'd hope on a £40k car, but I'd buy at least a year old so that doesn't matter much I suppose.

I'd be looking at a 04 car for low £30s, have there been any major upgrades since then?
Also would the touring version handle as well as the saloon?

Turboost, its quite simple really. I wouldn't buy one to try and save money but if in the market for a £35k fun saloon I'd rather have one that returns low 20s when thrashed than one that returns single figures.
I can tell you that the best I get from my car is 19mpg when cruising and 12mpg when driven sportily, it would be even less if I really thrashed it.

Not to mention resale, big dielses are a lot easier to shift than big petrols.

The model was revised at some point, in 05 I think. It got a start / stop button and I think there were actually quite a few revisions in the electronics etc.

I'd have thought it would do better than 32 mpg at 70 mph, my 1.8T A6 avant does that.

Your avant has about one third the torque though.

Granted, but when cruising its not used. I appreciate the extra capacity but I'd have still thought 40mpg @70 at least

Granted, when you look at the depreciation against the fuel savings it is a bit of an eye opener.

Yeah - seems a lot of fuss over these cars. Granted they are fantastic for a diesel but my old Saab 9k Aero has more power, almost the same torque (30Nm short) and does over 30mpg at 90mph, 35mpg at 70. Granted it's been tinkered with a little but not sure I see any huge strides given the 10+year age gap, handling aside... I'd need to be drawn by other reasons than performance/economy. Flame suited.

I'd have thought the petrol equivalent would suffer higher depreciation though?

It should be capable of that, to be honest, on a light throttle off boost.

Not quite sure what you mean, are you comparing like for like? Would a £40k 535d depreciate more than say a £40k petrol E Class Benz or petrol XJ Jag?

Maybe I'm missing something but which Saab diesel has 330bhp and 500ft lbs of torque?

i have 19's on mine, no issues with the ride quality very smooth and comfy, i think thats down to the run flats on the 18's you get as standard.

positives = comfort, looks great with tints and 19's, power, economy absolute min on mine 27 mpg, very spacious, massive boot, £1k @ dms = 501lbs and 320bhp and 60 in 5.5 secs (claimed)

negatives = lame a$$ gear box, no postcode entry on professional nav, very pricey with lame standard spec

have a look over on www.bmwland.co.uk for more info

Oh - it's petrol and has 340bhp and 400ftlbs so not miles away in peak output with the Beemer. Cars are similar in size although the Saab is lighter but ancient. Point was that there seems to be no benefit at all in going for 535D 'because it's good on fuel', cause it's not. I guess it's better than the petrol beemer equivalent at least.
That said I'd still have the beemer -great car overall - and it's undoubtedly going to be much shinier.

Yes so long you can stop the rear wheels spinning long enough to actually get anywhere. And that's in the dry!
