Land Rover Defender...
I know there's a few on here
What are they like to drive every day? I'm thinking of the 110 300Tdi on around an R plate.
I don't so much need one for its 4x4 ability, although I tow boats up and down the coutry regularly, and need something that I can throw things into without too many worries. I've been after one for years, and my current car's far too small for bikes & windsurfing kit etc... Can't sleep in it either, and I don't fancy a van....
Any experiences?

Nissan Navara of L200 style vehicle might be better if you are doing a few miles. I looked at a landie before buying the Navara and you can get a 3 year old Navara for the same pricer as a 10 year old landie.
Landies are a chore on a long drive but nothing pulls like they do.

I drove a 110 normally aspirated diesel as my daily drive for 18 months. It was actually ok when I got used to it, even with no power steering and not really having enough power. Long journeys were a pain though, as my Landy was ex-Army and had zero soundproofing - I used to wear ear defenders if I was going on the motorway! For short trips it was fine though, quite nice to drive. It was easier to park than the Citroen XM I had before.
In the winter it used to ice up on the inside, but I had no problem driving it wearing a down filled duvet jacket and a balaclava/gloves.

My mate had one at college - a bit older than a 98 model. It was very good at what it was good at - but the driving position isn't ideal and the gearing is quite short which is excellent for towing, but tiresome on a motorway. Fuel consumption was terrible too. You will never see 30mpg ever !
Quite reliable though as they are so simple - well maintained examples will go on forever and ever. Find an expert to help you look though - off road abuse can be a killer !

I mostly want it for towing tbh, and for carting all my gear around. Certainly not for the school run I hope not anyway Having said that, a scoob probably does similar mpg
I see no problem with them personally. I take the bike to work most days wherever possible, and work away for a lot of the time, so I wouldn't do a huge mileage anyway. Might even run on biodiesel if I could find any I think 4x4s have their place, but it ain't the school run, where the majority serve their time.
TBH, I don't think I've seen much above 30mpg in anything I've had, so it won't be a huge shock

Might be better off buying a Discovery or an old Range Rover if you're doing driving a lot of miles at one time. I've seen some cheapish LPG Range Rovers about.

I drive a Defender 110 at work.
I had a 300TDi until last year and now have a TD5.
You will be hard pushed to get an un-abused one that old so buy with care.
The Driving position is crap, you sit off set to the right and your right arm is crammed against the door, the only way to drive comfortably is to wind the window down and stick your arm out the window.
The seating offers no support at all and you will get back ache on long drives.
The engine is noisey and has little power off boost, the doors do not seal so expect wind noise, draughts and water coming in.
The whole thing will shake and rattle, fuel economy is dreadfull for a diesel with little power and handling is non existant.
So if you can see past all that they are a great tool, I tow and drive off road most days and there is nothing better.
I even owned one for myself some years back.
If I was only using it on road I'd go for a Discovery and get a bit of refinement and comfort.
Cheers

I couldn't get a tree into my Almera, or anything much else tbh, hence the change. I'll probably miss it once it goes, but hopefully my Defender will be a goodun.
I'll admit, they may not be 'good' cars in one sense of the word, but they have something about 'em which makes them desirable. Like Scoobs, in fact . Hardly perfect, but enjoyable all the same.
Saves a hellova lot on the insurance as well

Cramped, noisey, turning circle like an oil tanker, wipers are a joke, seat moves about 3", if you're over 5' 6" it's like giving birth to the stearing wheel.....unbeatable off road with M.T's on them tho!
Jon
driven too many 110's got a Pajero.

Completely impractical, I don't need it, no doubt it'll be crap but I really want one

you know the term drive it like you stole it, well the above link of the '******' will of been ragged around and will be pretty knackered. You would have to be mental to want ex military landrovers because they will of been properly abused, plus with all the armour they weigh to much and body roll is immence.

I was in The army and they are crappy on a long motorway journey, like the lads have said terrible driving position, I am 6ft and my knees are against the dash with the seat right back too...
Off road and towing they are amazing things best bar none....
Maintain and work on they are not the best can be very expensive....

Great fun but still thirsty on fuel.
And it'd probably have been dropped out of a 'plane
sometime...
