Depends what you like really. I've got an old xjr6 before they introduced the v8 in 97, and it does the job - fairly pokey (322/378) and pretty quick, even with the autobox. Very quiet and comfortable, but v thirsty, not that roomy and generally not very practical.
V8s from 97-2000 have Nikasil issues. Bit more power from lighter alloy block, same body, flaky cylinder linings. Most have had new a engine.
Post 2000 changes - extra 200cc at some point, all ally body, more roomy, faster, quite ugly.
Take your pick. Early ones are dirt cheap now. The straight 6 is a well-used engine and the box is agricultural but sturdy. V8s more £ but newer.
Try Jag-Lovers dot org for a comprehensive lowdown.

How much is he willing to spend ?
I have the 4.2 V8 in my S Type R, lots of grunt 400hp 400lb/ft and the auto box is a nice unit too.
More mile munchers rather than a Sports Car though...
Great turn of pace, piles on the speed something stupid over 60mph.

If he's going to spend that all, try and get a MY2001 or later, cos they changed the cylinder liners. I would spend a bit less - if it's good, a few more years doesn't matter and saves depreciation.

Insurance could be the least of his worries though. Fuel consumption is shocking, and parts range from a bit dear to very expensive indeed. Probably not worse than a scoob - my cheapest service/mot combo has been £300 and the dearest was £1800. That's at an independent.

Why did it cost you 1800 quid ?
Mine had done 40k miles when I bought it and it had just had a service I'm hoping as it's under warranty with the main dealer still costs shouldnt be that dramatic...
I don't think the fuel economy on mine is not too bad, I do a short journey to work and the odd motorway mile and it's averaging 22 mpg...
A long motorway trip it averaged just under 35mpg...
A Cooper S I had during my usual route only managed 25mpg and thats with a engine with a third of the capacity...

£1800 was the 10 year/100k service for starters, plus a front subframe, some rear wheel problem and a few quid investigating a misfire. So it was a one-off to be fair.
My cars have a hard life really, lots of town driving and living on the street getting bashed by nomarks who can't manouevre a car. I paid 8k for it 3 years ago, so the total cost has been ok really, considering that it's a big fast comfortable car. It's probably going this year if I can be arsed to find something new, but I'll miss the fat *******. Never let me down, although there's been the odd niggle now and then.
