Question Best small/medium car for £3-5k?

Not a sporty car or anything like that......just a car for a middle-aged woman to drive to work and back.

Needs to have 5 doors and not be too big. No need for a big engine either.

Was thinking:

Ford Focus
Ford Fiesta
Vauxhall Astra
Seat Leon
Renault Clio
Volks Polo
Pug 207

Any thoughts on the above or any other suggestions?

You can't go far wrong really. It does everything it's supposed to and will probably never break.

I'd narrow it down to the Focus and the Civic then let her choose whichever she likes best.

All the other cars on your list one could say "they're good but". The civic and focus, there is no "but".

Civic is rather, erm .....ugly

Went to auctions yesterday Focus shopping and most were quite tatty ex-lease.

They seem to hold their value well.

I've noticed that there is about a £1000 difference between 2001 and 2002 models. Slight facelift 2002 but not sure if its worth that much more.
