Megane RenaultSport or Civic Type R?
Hi All,
Looking at chopping in my car (MY51 Bug WRX) possibly for one of the above, anyone had any experience going from a WRX to one of these?
What are they like compared?

The Megane is very quick but bear in mind you'll be returning to the Renault dealer on a regular basis with problem after problem and you wish you'd never laid eyes on it.

The megane's arent that bad. Provided you get a good dealer or your lucky you will be fine.
Me personally think id be tempted by the megane rather than the CTR as the megane isnt as regulally seen on the roads but then thats me

They aren`t too bad round a track either..this is the std setup...cup/trophy/F1 variations as supposed to be better...plus a few simple mods will see 270bhp so nice and cheap to tune.

Really need to get best motoring video over here in europe. Alternatively I'll offer to drive if anyone fancies starting their own series
The megan actually grows on you I think. Particularly in blue with black wheels. If I had to have something sensible it would be on the list.

What about and Astra VXR or Focus ST?? Or are they a little brash?? I know some people don't like them because of image etc but the VXR seems to be well liked, can't comment on the ST as it doesn't appeal to me so never really asked about for opinions.
VXR is similair to the megane performance wise, although it has 240bhp out of the box and can be officially tuned whilst still honouring the VX warranty to 280bhp for about £1200 including remapp and full miltek stainless steel exhaust.
280 bhp would be fun in the twisties through the front wheels I would imagine!! You can switch between 240 and 280 bhp using the sport button, hit the button and you have the full amount of gee gees!! Neat little trick really.
If you are sticking to your choices of CTR and Megane, my heart says megane as I think they are quite funky and have a decent enough engine with 225bhp and look the part, The CTR is now getting dated but is uber reliable, has superb dealer network generally but I don't think I could live with thrashing the **** of the car to eak out every last bit of power.
Just my thoughts

Gotta be the CTR for me every time. Always been a fan of the v-tec engines (have owned two preludes) and much prefer the looks over the fat assed megane
You do need to use the V-Tec when you want to go fast but it's kinda nice being able to unleash the power when you chose, and it doesn't feel like you're thrashing it at all, they almost beg to stay in the v-tec lol.

I had a CTR for 18 months and sold it for a Scooby ...... the CTR was perfect; it never missed a beat and absolutely nothing went wrong - not even a squeak!
The seats were lovely and engine great. We added about 13k to the 9k already on it and it loosened up brilliantly. It really screams from 6k and is much more involving to drive than my WRX PPP.
I would try the Meg though - there don't seem many around ...... but is there a reason for that ! Renault reliability versus Honda ..... ? odd looks ..... but I presume more toys and the ability to modify cheaply.

If you go for the megan make sure its got a 'euro 4 engine' as this is getting good reviews and is generally up on standard power according to some Megan owners who have had there rr.

Drove a new Megane 225 a few weeks ago - very impressive and very quick car. RenaultSport do know what they are doing and if the VTEC engine isn't for you (and they're not for everyone) then I would seriously consider the Megane. They look good in black with the anthracite wheels (you will even ignore the big ****!)

Would have to be the honda every time. I had a CTR as a company car and after almost 50k miles and 3 or 4 track days it still drove like new and it was seriously abused. I tested a 225 Trophy recently but went for BMW in the end, 20k on a tin can or 20k on a quality car. Ok so I am now in the "w@nker club" but its a much better prospect for the next 3 years. Dont get me wrong I liked the 225 but it was not upto much inside, sounded dull and was limited by the FWD. Went for a 130iM in the end, which is stunning to drive and sounds brilliant! (looks a bit iffy though!)

True, but I would like to see some of these internet deals actually come off, I wanted a Focus ST and looked at getting one via an internet company for 2k off list price, only for the company to inform me they cant actually get them for that price "anymore".. hmm.. having been badly burned by an import in the past I dont think I would go that route again. Quite happy with my new car

Hi All,
I had a Scooby for nearly 4 years until I sold it and bought a 2-year old CTR in Nighthawk Black a couple of years ago and haven't looked back since !!
The CTR is not to everyone's taste. But I enjoy driving it and is more involved than the scooby and has better brakes ! I found that my CTR runs better on Super unleaded and feels like it pumping a few more horses. Don't listen to the rubbish that the CTR has no torque. Once in the VTEC zone it is fast and manic. Running cost are a little cheaper than the scooby and my CTR has never gone wrong.
Cheers

McWRX,
i have had two classic turbos in the past six years and one was the Terzo model. i now have a (05) Megane 225 and a (02) Mitsibushi Pajero Exceed. i have had no trouble with the Megane and use this every day to commute 80km's. i have not driven the CTR so cannot comment but the Megane is quick, handles well enough for the average driver, has good kit and all i can say is go and drive them both b4 you make up your mind!
the build quality is no worse than the subaru, mine has 5 year 150,000km factory warranty and tbh its a fun car to drive plus here in Australia nobody really knows what they are!
the megane is also very safe, with very good safety kit as standard, we had a track day provided by renault aus here and the instructor was really impressed with the handling.. the only way to really loose it was to disconnect the ESP by removing the fuse ! the car ESP can be overidden by a switch but at over 40 kmh it turns it self on again. (on the cup you can switch it off permanently)
i would recomend them and if i could persuade the wife i would be getting the facelifted cup later this year when it arrives in Australia.
if you need anything else please ask
pete

Thanks for the advice guys
I decided to go for the Type R... that VTEC noise is awesome and there were no rattles or problems at all with the car.
Roll on saturday. Will miss the burble of a fully de-catted Scooby tho!!!

To answer your question though, gota be japanese. Dont want any of that french ****e. If your looking for something punchy, get a Skyline or something.

few reasons really but mainly down to the fact its costing me a lot to keep it on the road and i fancied a hot hatch again with warranty and lower servicing costs.
Recently bought a house and would rather the money went on that
