Its new banger time what to buy?
After getting nearly 12 months out of my £300 diesel laguna and not spending a penny on it, its time to stick it in the auction and get a new banger as its gonna require more than the car is worth to get it through mot.
Dont want to spend more than £600 so does anyone have any ideas on a decent car prefrebly diesel thats going to last 12 months? Have been looking at a p reg mondeo td whats your opinions on these babies?

I always think a nissan is a good bet, although maybe not if diesel is a requirement. A good few Primeras on autotrader for <600 notes. Not bad cars either.

Mate - Having just bought my WRX I need a buyer for my Merc 190E 1.8 petrol. On a J plate and will last for at least another year, needs nothing mechanically.
These are widely known as the biz for reliability and longevity (not like the new ones) built whilst quality was not a dirty word!
Will sell all day long in the yellows for £750 but for you would take £650?
where about are you, want a pic or is it just too banger like!!!!!

I don't think, at your budget, the make and model of car is *that* important. What's more important is condition, engine/g/box, how well it drives etc.
It comes down to whether or not you get a good one of whatever you see. A crap merc will cost a fortune and a good laguna won't. The reverse is, of course, the same (and more likely) but at £600 quid I'd keep it simple, things that aren't desirable but aren't bad cars (vaux omega & the like for example).

Mondeo TD... good car with good handling (especially the 4-door saloon), but horrible engine! In petrol guise they're good and reliable, but the diesel engine is so bad it's a waste of time having a nice chassis. Very narrow power band (and I use the word "power" a little sarcastically) and worse turbo lag than an early Impreza!

Rover 216GTi.. Honda Engine & 'Box.. Been taking the dog to the beach reliably for the past 6 months nearly, not spent a penny on it. Left it for 3 weeks, started first turn of the key.

I bought my mrs an R reg (98) Clio in 2001 for £2800. Finance repo.
She did 40k in it and sold it for £340 more than we paid for it 2 years later.

I bought a 94 escort cabrio in 2002 for £595, after a bout of good weather in cornwall sold it for £1595 12 days later just a shame all my dealing did not go like that
