Best car for £2500?
My mate has a 1999 T reg Vauxhall Astra 1.6 SXI with a few mods, and hes looking to spend around £2500 to get something quicker but still looks fairly modern... insurance isnt really an issue. He was considering a scoob but i reckon he'd only be able to get a dog of an import for that sort of money!
Celica gt4? MR2 turbo?
btw... he cant have a Prelude V-Tec, coz ive just got a 2.3 and that would seriously annoy me!
Any suggestions please?
(editted the 'i' out of 2.3i after a number of complaints...)

If he can only afford £2.5k, then will he be able to afford to run a GT4/MR2 etc.?
I would imagine any Jap performance car worth £2.5k could turn out to be a serious money pit.
If all he wants is faster than a 1.6 Astra, then what about a VR6, T5 or something similar - they are pretty bombproof.
If he can afford to run it, then probably a MR2 Turbo - these are pretty cheap at the mo?

Yeah he reckons he can afford to run it. The reason he has to keep his budget low is because he also needs to think about getting a van for work. And when he does, that'll keep the miles off his car.
Ive had a quick look in Parkers and eGay... Corrado VR6 or Mitsu Galant 2.5V6 seem realistic. I like the idea of a volvo 850 / S70 T5... very cheap and very quick! But the only way he'd get into a volvo is if you arrested him

He says it has to be modernish.
If he wasn't that bothered, what about a 205 Mi16. These all seem to be 2 grandish:

This clean looking number is only £1400.

Any Mr2 turbo you pick up for £2.5k will be as much of a dog as a scooby for the same money, but you mind fine a reasonable Celica GT4.
Shame you ruled out a 2.2 Prelude as £2.5k is fine, and they represent superb value for money. I just sold mine to get an STi for exactly that price, 1993L in excellent condition with 70k miles and a few careful mods. Cracking performance and handling along with excellent reliability - definately gets my vote in that budget range

What about this:

Twist his arm and he might take £2.5k, and although it could do with a few bits and bobs to freshen it up its pretty reasonable?

You can get good MR2 t for that money if you've time to sift through the crap.
I sold my Rev 3 for that sort of cash 4.5yrs ago and she's still mint and going as I left her.
Insurance can be silly on these, though.
