It probably hit the barrier whilst in a high-speed spin, and as it hit the barrier suddenly slowing the spin, the heavy engine right at the back ripped out the back.
Looks like the occupants were ok in that accident luckily.

I saw a 911 crash at high speed a few years ago and it was very similar, car broke up and bits everywhere. It happened late at night and he was doing 120+ when he lost it. It was close to a junction so I turned round expecting to pull up and find the driver dead.. he was already out sitting on the side of the motorway (trying) ligting a ***. First police car on scene had a blow out on the other side of the motorway (side I had been on) on all the bits of the car which was kind of amusing when he pulled up in his range rover looking a bit sad for itself!

Nice to see some sensible policing no incedant support services !!! no lets close the bahn for 6 hours whilst we cone it to death!!!
what i cant work out is....
in pic 1 you can see the tyre marks prior to the on ramp, and they run into the armco,,, a huge section of armco has been displaced, and the uprights flattened, and then the car has continued on to finish up on the outside lane several hundred yards up the road. yet the armco is pushed well into the field, with no apparant tyremarks near it.... or could that be due to the kinetic energy from the impact.

Just about to say something similar mart. The same thing over here and the motorway would be closed off for 12 hours for endless faffing about. Is it me or do motorways close much more often these days?

I've seen few mangled 993 and 996s, and everyone of them has faired very well interms of protecting occupants. This cabrio is even more impressive because the roof doesn't really have any structural support (although hard top may add some rigidity), whereas you expet to see the floorpan fold behind the front bulkhead and infront of the rear bulkhead.
The most startling one for me was one that impaled itself into a lamppost well past halfway up the bonnet area, which then proceeded to fall over on to the rear quarter. Chassis was obviosuly bent with front rail bent inwards and some minor distortion after the bulkhead.
What startled me was the car even though with heavy chassis, subframe and suspension damage (plus the ususal airbags, body and severed brake lines etc ) was passed for a repair by insurers rejigged and repaired by official porsche repairers. Any other car (even of same value) would have been written off on the spot. Problem was the repairers weren't up to it. And we found they had to shave a few thou off the passenger door edges to get the correct shut gaps Obviously the repairers were not the best at the art of jigging chassis and failed to fully regain the missing mm in wheelbase

In an impact like that engines are suppose to come away from the body so they don't enter the driver area and cause many more injuries or even death, I had a simular experiance in 1996, OK I was only in a brand new Ford Escort van but I had a drunk driver hit me head on at over 100mph, I was trapped for 3 hours but the engine and gearbox came out in one peice and was found about 30 yards away.
