Default vw passat problem

A mate of mine has a vw passat 01 plate ,when accelerating from ist gear the car seems to hold back ,when in 5th gear and the accelerator is pressed it pulls no problem what could cause this very confusing is it the turbo as it's the td 130bhp model.

Airflow meters on these cars are often dodgy.

That sounds like the problem.. MAF sensor, very common.. Unplug it and take it for a drive and see if it stops holding back (it wont tickover very well!)

just took it out for a drive ,and yes it does seem a little hesitant when you put your foot down in first ,second then third and so on.

where do you start withb these,lifted the lid and it's all plastic covers don't no where to start.

It'll look something like this, just after the air filter:



Just pull the connector off the side. They're easy enough to replace too, although you need a torx driver.

Mate had this problem on his 99 tdi, it got so bad that after weeks in workshop, VW running all kinds of tests and even replacing loads of parts, they still didnt know what was wrong.

I can't be absolutely certain but i think it was just a dodgy fuse that when eventually replaced solved the problem - although how that would cause such a big problem was never uncovered.

Maybe just VW being incompetent though??
