Default A3 1.8T quattro

My mate has just bought an 01 plate A3 1.8T quattro, 180bhp out the wrapper i believe.

Does anybody have any experience with these engines, whats the score when it comes to tuning a car to a lightly modded standard? He's not an engine man, more of a driver and I have slim knowledge of these powerhouses so any input will be thankfully received

one of the more tunable engines out there....very very strong motors, REVO and AMD would be good ports of call for engine work, can get it to 300 probably cheaper than an impreza.

Pretty sure it is the same engine used in the 180TT.

Was told by an Audi Tech. friend that they come with Forged Pistons as standard... which is nice to know once you turn the boost up.

As was mentioned above, a 500quid re-map will see you around 230bhp.

Cheers,
Grant

Just to clarify a little my brother has a A4 1.8T Quattro this is an 02 Model year. This model actually runs 163 bhp. We had the 5 hour test map from Revo done and its takes power up to circa 200hp. Remarable change in the performance. He will probably go with Revo as AMD are to far to travel.

Just to clarify the above, the 180hp transverse engine will give more than the A4 version when tuned due to a slightly different turbo.

Isn't the S3 a stronger engine with forged internals???

I was told the 1.8T had Forged Internals... and we were talking about our old MY03 1.8T A4 S-Line at the time, so I assumed he meant in general the 1.8T's came with Forgies, I could be very wrong though.

No, your very right, Audi used to own Mahle who make most cars forged pistons... I think all but the very early 150hp Passat 1.8T's had Forged pistons.

mmm..... Revo aren't the best tuners to go to (from what I've heard on rsw246.com and audi-sport.net)

Most people either favour AMD or MRC Tuning........

But to answer the poster's question, as others have said - the engine seems to be pretty solid. As a later revision to the engine in my (Biturbo V6 2.7), and mine's built like a brick whatsit, it can only be better

Might be wrong but I thought they were 150bhp. I know they were for sure on an X plate

The fwd models were 150bhp, the Quattro 1.8T A3s were all 180bhp, bar the S3 which was more

As said, all bar the early Passet 1.8t engines have forged pistons as standard.

Try Jabbasport for a custom map, you should see around 220-230 bhp.
Research Revo etc carefully, I am not knocking them but Ive heard a few bad reports on other forums

Jabbas site is www.jabbasport.com

Note all their prices are inclusive of VAT, others arent

It will vary slightly depending on the spec of the car, they have a selector thingy on the site where you simply enter the model & it will give you a good idea of what you can expect, alternativly give them a call, they are a friendly bunch. Their cars have won the VW cup a couple of times so they know their stuff

They also do big turbo conversions, my Octavia 4x4 is currently knocking out 356 & its still over 300 when it hits the limiter at 7800, anything more than this & on the Audi you will have to start looking at strengthening the internals

If the quattro has the same suspension and brakes as the normal 1.8T Sport, that's where I'd start spending money before power hikes! Ours 1.8T is comfortable but not that inspiring in the corners.

To right. I did 120k in a 99 1.8 T-Sport. The suspension was massively over damped and there was NO feel in the steering.

And the dealers are terrible

But I loved her. Classy cabin, good mid range punch and stealthy with it.

I wanted another but the 3.0 V6 is loads of cash

not the same as the TT, TT has twin intercoolers and from what I ahve read different pistons.

TT is the same as the S3 engine and also the LCR, but the 1.8T in 150 and 180 guise is a lower spec with a lesser map.

Turbo is different too.

can range between K03 and K03s, whereas TT has K04.

As a B road blaster yes, but as an understated yet classy, roomy, safe, comfortable family car no.

180bhp TT's are exactly the same. They use the ko3 turbo and 1 IC,

210/225 varients of the VAG 1.8T use the Ko4 turbo and twin side intercoolers.

All have forged mahle pistons good enough and been proven at well over 300bhp.
