Default service indicator on modern cars

Stupid quesition but how do those service indicator system work ( the car tells you when you need a service)

how do they work ?

Most take info from the ECU and work it out from there.

Fuel used, oil temperature, milage, time, etc.

What Lee said.

The VAG cars that can be set up for "long-life" service also have a sensor just by the oil filter which apparently measures oil degradation too, but I've no idea how it actually does it or what exactly it measures.

IMHO you're still better dropping the oil every 10K or so, but I'm old-school
