WHAT CAR TO GET FOR MY DAD (HE'S PAYING)
Here is the brief:
My old man is getting rid off his company car within the next month and needs to get a new car.
Unfortunately he is now on a waiting list for two hip replacements and is currently struggling to get in and out of an ordinary car.
He should get the operations within the next year and so needs a temporary car for say the next 1 - 1.5 years.
Budget - circa 10k cash
Gearbox - automatic
Fuel - preferably diesel (reasonably high mileage)
The car will need to be reasonably high up for him to get in/ out of.
I have suggested:
Mistibishi Shogun/ people carrier etc
What do you guys think?
We would probably pick up one privately.
We are in Glasgow if anyone has anything of interest.
Regards,

Id say he would have difficulty getting into the shogun, as its 2 high up. Id say a MPV would do the job perfectly or a audi A2 1.4TDI or 1.6 FSI. Can pick up a low mileage 2003 model for 5K and has tons of space and really comfortable. Drives and feels alot better than the 5k price tag would suggest and minimal depreciation.

Get a jeepette rather than a jeep - RAV4 etc. But I don't know how many came with auto gearboxes, and that sounds like a must for him.
Zafira? Must be loads of them about, out of which a few autos.

As daft as it sounds, the old chap's got a Xsara Picasso diesel. Both Ma & Pa find it easier to get in and out of than conventional cars. Also, my 102 yr gran gets in and out of it easily too...........

Stephen,
How about a Forester converted to gas?
My old man runs my old Forester and you dont have to stoop down into a forester its almost level for getting into. Plenty of auto versions about for sale might even be one with gas convertion already as this is a popular mod.
Should get a good one for 10k.

I just sorted out a Honda Jazz for my dad (mid 70's) Its a really good little car. I got a year old one from a Honda dealer with 2300 miles for £9995. They have won their class in all the magazines for the past 3 years, this year is voted best super mini and best overall in Auto Car and Car mags.
It is a lot bigger inside than it looks, is gp 3 to insure and they do auto (CVT7) and diesel.
Cheers Col

LPG is a simple and effective convertion on a Forester. There is a company @ the west end of Glasgow (Clarkston Motor Company) that are registered for convertions and I've heard nothing but good reports about them. Worth a though.....

PS can you imagine yer old man with NOS

I'd say mini/midi mpv too.
I've got a 90 yr old aunt who says cars with leather seats are much easier to get in and out of, cos she can slide in/out better... might be worth trying if that's a concern.
