Quick 205 GTI question
Mate has a GTI and its refusing to fire up. Turns over but no fueling.
Might sound odd but do 205s have a fuel cut-off switch? I know 106&306 have them but not sure on 205.
Thanks

Im not aware of 205's having a fuel cut-off switch - that sounds like a safety feature - and 205's done have any of them
Could maybe be a failed fuel pump, or maybe a faulty immobiliser which is cutting the fuel pump.

Hi
Well known problem with 205 is the crankshaft position sensor.
This is on the right hand side of the block - at the bottom.
The electrical plug that joins to the sensor wire gets dirty/corroded - then the ECU does not know what position the crank is in.
Then it wont start!
You need to disconnect plug and thoroughly clean it.
This is a very common fault on the 205 GTI!
Hope this helps
Cheers!

Is the rev counter bouncing when you turn it over? Have you checked the basics like the HT leads and the distributor?
Could be the CPS but could also be the ignition amp (connection or failed) or failed coil - always difficult to diagnose these sort of things from a distance.

You need to first deduce whether its fuel or spark thats missing, then work the problem out from there.
I'm 99% sure that pre 92/93(cat) std 8V GTI's dont have a working crank angle sensor, not one thats used by the ECU anyway, though I could be wrong, my 16v has a CAS, but its been a while since I messed with an 8V
If you're getting fuel but no spark, then check the coil, ign amp, HT leads, dizzy cap and so on.
If there's spark, but no fuel, check the fuel pump, FP relay, tachy relay etc. and work it out from there.

I had one back in 1985 - 105 brake before the upgrade. It had leaking injectors and wouldn't start when cold - all the fuel had leaked into the engine and evaporated overnight, and wouldn't start from hot - it leaked inside and flooded the engine. Sorted under warranty.
Maybe worth a look?
