I know this will upset the non 205 brigade :-
Morning PG
but we bought a 205 1.9 for £250, then add:
Cage £200
Suspension £100
Seats / harnesses £100
Nos £100
and it still leaves £250 for slicks/spares etc
We run approx 170 bhp (with nos) all day long in a car that weighs the same as a full can of beans
Another option would be the 1.6 16v saxo (dunno about sub £1K though)

I echo the votes for the 205 - cheap, decent grip, fun handling, plenty of bits available etc etc

Cheers

big daz - i presume those parts where all 2nd hand,

i.e. a cheap seat will be

100 x 2 = 200

harness

120 x 2 = 240

full cage

450 x 1 = 450

nos seems v.cheap @ 100?

suspension = 100? is that some bushes or 2 springs?

Harness £35 each 4 point
Cage 2nd hand 6 point bolt in £200
Nos - 2nd hand Bike kit £100 - Lightweight + controller £40 twisted sanity
Suspension - Leda 280lb springs & Koni shocks + Koni rears £100 total (barely used)
Quickshift £6
Spare wheels - £50 for 4 speedlines
Slicks £100 full set - ex clio cup series

It can be done, just need to find bargins on ebay & 205drivers club

309GTI is more stable that the 205, I will also have one for sale ready caged with seats/harnesses/extinguiser/spares package/stripped etc after the WYIOC blyton day out. See the WYIOC section, the missus wants rear wheel drive next.

in my day it was the talbot sunbeam but i doubt there are many around these days....HMMM cogs grinding. I think i would have to go for the pug 1.9 gti...there used to be turbo kits for the rally cars and it stuck well to the tarmac. Saying that you dont see many of them these days either so i would say Clio. how much is an a4 quatro these days? they have been around a while and they destroyed the british touring cars when they first came here?

That might be true but its heavier and boy is it fugly!

I'd go with the 205 1.9 GTI with 1.6 box. Save the NOS money and get tuition instead, going fatser in the corners is the key

Agree to a certain extent with above, I think I have a 1.6 box anyway (BE 1?)
Next step is full brake upgrade for faster cornering
As we mostly do Scooby days the Nos is essential for the 2 main straights
This is where we loose most ground.

I really don't see what all the fuss is about with this mandatory answer that you have to get tuition to make you faster. So what if you knock 10seconds a lap off, there's no prizes. It's having as much fun as possible that counts imo.

it's also much cheaper to buy a car already converted to track/race spec.

Going back to my ford days, and considered this myself a few times. I would go for a Xr3I.

In my younger days these would out handle most things, and the one I had could take sooooo much abuse, and do it all day long. Strip it to get the weight down I would say an XR3i would be a formidable car on the track, and not let you down or cost you a fortune to fix it or keep it on the track. Plenty of parts available.

Mmmmm You have got me thinking about this again.!

Mk3's are rare to come by these days unfortunately, although still v.cool

trouble is the mk4's handle like a dogs dinner so I wouldn't recommend one of them
