Safety is probably your main concern:

A lad at work who is 17 has just bought his first car, looked at the usual corsas, fiesta etc..Then decided he wanted a beema, phoned round the insurance and found it was cheaper to insure a 318i than it was to insure a 1.2 corsa! So he went out and bought an N plate 318i! Not bad for a first car

Why spend £3-£4K get something for £1,500 and keep the rest for the next car. £1,500 will get you a good 5-6 year old Ford I would think.

Lupos are much much better than the old Polos. New Polos are probably better but way out of the price range

lucky girl...3-4k!!! Fabias are quite good...but I agree with Lupos or Polos as well. Any VAG car should be quite good.

I'd probably go for a KA, great handling (nearly as good as my MX5!), cheap as chips to buy (well under 4K) and fix if and when it gets stuffed!

I'd seriously consider spending between 1.5-2K on this 1st car but save the rest (as someone else said) for the next motor, when the NCB has gone up a bit and a few years driving experience under the belt.

Fabia's are great buys and the 1.2's are group 1 or 2 insurance.

She'll want a bit of street cred though so I'd tell her to go for a Fiesta, they are great to drive and cheap to service and fix.

Cheers

Fiesta 1.25 zetec, great little car, handles well, low insurance group and really nippy considering the engine.

Mine hasnt caused me any problems, on 80,000 miles now. Great fun.

Highly recomended

That's more like it I take it she earned it going up chimneys?

Sorry mate, silly mood, but it's a free bump - I'd echo the Ford advice or go Japanese FWIW . But why does everyone want the smallest possible car as a first car? What's wrong with something Focus-sized?

True.

Thinking back a few years I had an Orion.... was involved in an accident and was doing 50 when I hit the brakes.

One wheel was shifted 9", the other 6". The front was a complete mess. If I had being in a 106/Corsa/Ka sized cars I would of been seriously injured.

Cheaper insurance yes. Safe if involved in an accident? No

Don't the newer cars have much better crash protection than an old Orion? I was in a pretty bad smash in my mates tricked up Saxo (which doesn't have the best rep when it comes to solidity!) 60mph into a ditch witha couple of nose over tail flips. Thankfully we all got out without too much damage - dunno if a slightly bigger car would have been any better...

Some other good suggestions out there, Micra especially (suggested a friend got one for £800 as a runaround - she sold it 2 yrs later without losing a penny!)

Yes, that was my view/point. But fair enough for the later comments, newer cars certainly have better crash protection than older ones, size for size.

£4k would buy you a low mileage Citroen C2 with manufacturers warranty.

4 star Ncap crash rating (wayyy better than any old escort/orion) and loads of street cred for someone that age.

Well built (for a french car) and pretty reliable. Very cheap insurance too.

Very east to drive around town, great and safe handling elsewhere.

Just stay well clear of the paddle shift geatbox.

I did 22,000 miles in a C2 GT 1.6 16v. Drove it like I stole it. It had one main dealer service in that time (£100) two front tyres and the horn replaced under warranty.

Nothing else went wrong, fell off or broke. Averaged about 36 mpg (remember I drove it like I stole it )

Good paint on it, no creaks or rattles which was pretty impressive considering the GT had very hard springs.

Cracking little car. If I had a 17 year old daughter I would be quite happy for her to be running around in one of the lower powered ones.

Just got my gf a small car as shes just past her test. A 97 ka, 1100 quid. Full history and in very good condition. She wanted something newer at first, but shes already had a few scrapes etc and glad she got something older. It goes up and down motorways no problems. Get full AA breakdown cover or something similar and youll have no probs. Id personally wait about 6 months then sell it and get something nicer.

Got mine off of Ebay, loads upon loads on there. On Ebay there generally seems to be a lot more info about each car than youd get say in the autotrader or the local rag.

A young adult is very image conscious. Dont think micras, yaris', and those citroens will do the job.

What is the budget for insurance?

Most youngsters seem to like corsas as they seem to be the thing to have as a first car, but after having seen what my mum managed to do to one in a low speed accident I wouldnt want to put my loved one in a corsa.
