1.6 8v 90bhp a bit lacking in the performance department, 2ltr 8v 115bhp better but the 150bhp 16v prob the best to go for.
Ive a 97 megane DT classic, 120k (ok the head gasket has gone) but its worn very well for its age, nothing serious knackered and no rust.
Ensure its got fsh though, renaults dont like to be abused
Oh and there is naff all room in the back unless your about 10 years old (ok for the kids)

Hi
If I was being unkind - I would call them cheap, French carp!
I used to do a lot of work with Renault in UK & France on diagnostics - I have visited their factory in Douais (near Lille) - where Meganes are put together.
After all this - I would not touch one with a barge pole!
Cheers
Steve

Looking old and dated now IMO
and, there cheap and nasty inside ant the handeling is poor to say the least, no feedback what so ever. Not sure if that will be a problem with it not being our car,
I was loooking at the 150hp coupe, but then i bought the 306 Rallye, a much better drivers car, but its even more basic and probably not as upmarket as the renault, but it all serves its purpose.....
If its the coupe your after, have you not thought of the FTO. They do a 1.8 GS version, with the MK2 front on they look very nice. Not going to be the fastest thing on the planet, but its japanese and its reliable....
a couple of thoughts for you there....
John

nice one John,
Hadn't looked at the FTO, due to the lack of boot and kid space......
Whilst she wants a bit of "fun", there's still the realistic factor to take into consideration!!

well if you like the look of it, i would go take a serious look mate.
I think you would be supprised at the boot space, i thought for a coupe it was quite big, volume wise, it was no smaller than that of a 306 im certain of that.
As for the kids, it was on a regular basis i had 2 adults in the rear of mine when i had it
apart from sliding the seats forward, (which is still the case in the Megane) it really wasnt a problem...
I had the V6 version which was quite a good car, very thirsty though

Looked at a few Coupe's with a friend. 1.6 16V in silver 50k miles with the nicer alloys was the target. Nice looking car.
BUT The number of faults on all the cars we looked at was appalling. By the time we finished looking I was totally put off them.
Electrics are a joke (every single car had a fault of somesort) , leaks, overheating, sloppy gear changes, paint flaking off the rubbery plastic rear spoiler, usual CV joint 'made from lego' nonsense on low mileage cars along with various other suspension clonks.
I'm sure the main mechanic will ramp up the miles, but the rest of the car falls apart around it. Reminded of my old BX... no fanks!

Friend of mine had a Megane a while back, was only a few years old and low mileage. Started it up one cold winters morning to go to work, put the heater on full, drove 20 yards, and the engine went up in flames. Was a blackened shell by the time the fire brigade got there ten minutes later. Kind of put me off buying one myself!!
