Just there seems to be a lot of good ones just under 20k now. Surely thats one hell of a car for the money??

I assume one could cost a fair bit to run, but being able to punish nearly everything must be worth it?!

I doubt i'd ever own one as its too big but very tempting.

Very nice, but then that shape 5-series is a decade old, and looks it.

Far too many boy'd up ones driving about (inc lots of M5 replica's), and that damages the image of all of them - inc the M5.

400bhp and rear drive for only 15k is rather tempting despite the downers however

Is it really a decade old? I think it still looks tough, and nicer than the new shape. Ive never seen a boyed up one either, maybe the E34 shape...

Yeah Ive never seen a kitted up 5 series neither. Theyre pretty rare, or are were I live. Cant relaly talk about image when this is a scooby forum.

..If you're in the market for that sort of car around that price - nothing touches them in my opinion.

E46 M3's can be picked up for less than £20k quite easily now too..

I guess the servicing price increase dropped prices a bit.

trouble is great as they are , without a very comprehensive warranty you get stung with massive bills for even small things from bmw and if something major breaks or fails you gonna need to remortgage to sort it,i bet mpg and insurance will be interesting too.

i had a 540 sport and in the year i had it i had thousands of pounds of warranty work done (it was about 3 years old).......without a warranty it would have killed me...god knows what an M5 could be like!

no good buying one at 16K then needing to find £10k to fix something!

E46 is the model code for 3 Series from 1999 - 2004-ish or whatever.

E39 is the model code for 5 Series from 1996 - 2003-ish or whatever. That black one above is the E39.

Running costs man. I'd sell the S2000 in a moment for one if it wasn't for the astronomical difference in keeping the thing on the road. Nice cars although when you see the new shaped one in the flesh the outgoing model does seem a little dated.

My mate had £7k worth of warranty work done to his E46 BMW M3, Can see why as he drives it like he stole it.

Most of the warranty work I've had done is for on-board electronics type stuff, aircon panel, monitor etc. rather than mechanical stuff and the huge prices are a reflection of the dealers creaming BMW I would say.

Insurance at 33, Business use, 20k miles a year is £689 and MPG is 22 or so.

You shouldn't have a tight budget if you want to run one but unless you drive the wheels off it they are not that bad IMO. Cheaper than an Evo6!

As an aside, the E46 M3 is *much* dearer to service!

Mark, remember the guy i know who had the VTEC engined mini...
He has one of these in black that he is thinking of selling... Well spec'd very little use, he actually doesn't seem to use it much, preferring his old M5 as his run around. Suspension and brake upgrades, very nice looking car, might be a bit long for your garage though!

Morning Rich That's the prob with most stuff at the moment, std size single garage or I would have tried a Skyline. Guy at work has the same size garage as me and fits a 530 (new) touring in there with about 5cm to spare so I think an M5 would just fit. Ive got the measurements

How do you find the running costs? OK or high? I'm changing my car over Summer 2006 & I'm thinking of STi, EVO MR or M5. Got about £15k as budget.

No problems at all really.

I recently did the brakes all round for about £1k but they last for ever, had the wheels refurbed and it all polished up but, day to day, as long as you can live with 22mpg you should be fine.

Service intervals are about 15k miles and a set of F1's last me about 15-20k miles @ £700 a set so if you can run a Scooby then you can run one of these.

A lot of non-official BMW service places are starting to specialise in M cars now as well so the costs of running one will become more reasonable as time goes by.

Swapped my WRX for an M5 last year, its a stunning car, and so far hasn't really cost anymore to run than the scoob. Infact its cheaper to own as i'm not modifying her!!

I've never seen one, even on the forums about the most extreme i've is the Stoptech BBK. Anyhow, we are on a impreza forum here, probably one the worst cars hit by the "boy'd up/replicas damaging the image" problem

you've only put about 5 miles on it since you had it, you did 30k in the scoob. Just wait till after the wales trip then we'll both hit bmw with our credit cards for tyres, brakes etc etc etc!

there is no question the recent m cars are bloody expensive to run, my inspection 1 due in a couple of k will cost me at least 700 quid and one rear tyre is 300 quid fitted. All the boys on the bm3w forum who have defected to porsche all say they are cheaper to run with servicing, parts and warranty etc all cheaper then m cars. Basically there great cars, just make sure you can run it. Just because the cars 15k don't expect mondeo running costs expect running costs in line with a 50-60k car.

£15k ? we recently took a 99' E39 as a px at £9k and that was book value (trade obviously) The car had done 130k miles but a lot of these cars for sale are also high mileage. I did contemplate buying it myself but the £14k warranty bill for the replacement engine it had just had made me stop and think for a minute ! Nice cars but with rear wheel drive and all that power could be very easy to get yourself into trouble in the wet as I found out when I test drove one last year.

i had the e39 m5 after owning both sti spec c and m3 ideal family car loads of fun, very powerfull indeed . i did find it more to run though the fuel bills were quite high . Now in a evo and quite supprised how many mpg its doing!

to sum up the m5 is a cracker for the ££££ still dont compare to the scoob/evo for fun.

I have an M5 and a classic scoob. The scooby is now used as a scond car but I love them both. I have just put 4 new Dunlop sp9000 on the M5 and it was £650ish. The M5 I get 22 to the gallon but have never really checked the scoob, 220 per tank full I think. I have full BMW warenty on the M5 and would think if you don't / could not afford 5k+ if something major goes wrong don't bother getting one. Servicing on the Scooby is every 7500 miles servicing on the M5 is 12 -15k. I don't notice any big difference on running costs yet but have only done 12k in mine and it got the big service when I bought it.
