8v = poo (badged as GL in Europe)
16v = not bad

I'd have a 16v again over the mk2 I've had, a lot more refined, and quite good fun at higher revs

Get a well looked after mark 2, 8 or 16 is well debated on here so on the MK2 there is a choice wheras the MK3 8 valve is plain embarrassing.

My wife has a MK3 8v and yes it is most definitely NOT a performance car of any kind! But as a reliable 2 ltr GL they are good cars and cheap to buy now. I think the handling is quite good, good grip but does roll, you could sort it out quite easily with some better shocks and springs but it is too slow to be any fun. My wife thinks it is fast!!!!!

Chippy, nail on head, if you see it as a torquey 2 litre golf its not too bad.

VR6 costs are actually quite a lot more, 20 mpg versus 30 mpg, I seem to remember that the insurance was a bit dearer which put me off.

My ex had one and it was crap. Handles badly , horrible steering and the brakes were lifeless and were liuke a switch nothing then emergency stop.

Not especailly well built either. The gold was her compnay car and she had a Punto Sporting herself and we always took the Punto unless it was a long journey then we'd use the Golf to keep the miles off but nobody wanted to drive it.
