Clio Trophy - opinions?
I'm currently considering buying a clio trophy over the next Month or so. As you can pick them up for about £11500 with two years warranty remaining, they look like a good , fun, not too expensive to run car. I've heard of some quality gremlins, trim falling off etc, but to be honest My STI 5 I owned slaughtered me for cash so if I have a car under warranty it shouldnt be too bad?
Anyone owned a trophy or know of a dedicated forum for them?
Many thanks,
Cal

I would have one of these any day of the week. They have their fair share of problems, but don't let that put you off. The Trophy IMO will be one of those hot hatches that people talk about in 20+ years time. I think, if you can, you need to own one, then tick it off you 'top 10 cars to own before you die' list - IMO of course.

Any owners out there with comments?

they went downhill after the 172.
quite quick, and lots of grip. good fun.
Makes you sweat on b-roads then and the nose goes all over the place on straight b roads, it's happier in the corners.
Steerings to light to have any real feel as it the throttle and clutch and the brakes are snatchy.
Still a hoot, built like french cars used to be... fall apart but go fast and handle well.
Forget the newer ones, the latest clio weighs more than my RB5
actually forget the cup, go for a williams and spend the difference keeping it from disintigrating

Hi, Neil pointed me at this post so i thought i'd sign up. I own a Clio Trophy (no. 041/500) and am the founder of the cliotrophy.co.uk website. We have about 125 of the 500 owners registered on the site now.
Great cars, just put a smile on your face every time you drive them.
I wouldnt worry too much about problems, there have been a few common ones but nothing major. They really aren't badly built at all, and the benefits far outweight any problems.

Cheers chaps, I'm just scraping the funds together over the next few weeks, but I owned a 306 GTI6 a few years ago before my scoobs and its the car I've enjoyed the best, so a trophy should be even more so, Can't wait!
Just going to pop over to your website now, nick.

I had a Clio Cup for 3 years (sold the day before the warranty ran out) I loved driving the Clio but I will NEVER buy another Renault as long as I live. The chances are you will have nothing but bother with the car, yes it will have a warranty but getting on first name terms with the local staff won't take long, as it will never be out of the place. I don't think I went more than 5 months without having something going wrong with it.

Whats the deal with the suspension on the Trophy Clio, does it have both height & damping adjustability or just damping...... or nothing at all, is it obvious I know nothing about this?!

The suspension is very hard if you drive a lot. One of my employees has one and is going to get shot due to this. I used to have a full fat 182 and really notice the difference.
All very good having a car that handles well, but if you cant handle the ride its not much good

I went to test drive a Clio 172 before I settled on a MY00 Impreza Turbo. Glad I chose the Impreza.
The pro's and cons of the Clio in my mind were -
Pro's
- Cheap for the performance
- Didn't look as bad as I thought it would (i'm not keen on the look of hot hatches)
- Seemed pretty quick
Cons
- I didn't like the driving position at all. I felt too high up, and either felt too close to the pedals/steering wheel or too far from the gear stick! Perhaps I'm oddly proportioned
- Hated the steering wheel. All big and grey. Felt like I was driving a bus or a shopping run-around.
Glad I went for the Impreza in the end.

My 205 would **** on a Trophy for fun
I do like the Trophy's though, great looking car, nice colour, and proper old school French handling - I would seriously look at one if I was after a newer hot hatch.
