Default Cayman as fast as an STi?

Is it? Both have circa 300 BHP and similar weight. Does that mean a Cayman has as much grunt as a PPP STi? If so then why does everyone go on about the car being underpowered?

It would be much quicker than the STI imaine by some margin. The Cayman is almost as quick as a GT3 around the top gear test track, hardly science but it demontrates it's abilities at least.

Stats are hardly be all and end all, but for comparison:

Cayman
0-60 mph - 5.1
0-100 mph - 12 seconds
1/4 Mile - 13.7 s @ 105 mph
Top Speed - 171 mph

Scooby STI PPP
0-60 mph - 5.1
0-100 mph - 13.2 seconds
1/4 Mile - 13.9 s @ 99 mph
Top Speed - 155 mph

Would be interested in comparing WHP if anyone knows the drive train loss of each ?

Times for Top Gear test track -

Cayman 1:26.2 (911 Carrera S 1:28.9, GT3 1:27.2 & GT3 RS 1:22.3)

WR1 1:29.4 (STi 1:30.1, EVO VIII 1:28.9 & FQ400 1:24.8)

Some 'ring times -

Spec C 8:06 (Spec C "prototype" 7:59)
Cayman S 8:11

There's a little bit more to designing a fast car than power and weight!

About time Porsche made a car as good as a 944 again

Cayman as fast as an STi?

Probably is close enough as to make any real difference.

Slower in the twisties, but faster on the rutted farm track

Would make a good rallycross show

Its faster, better looking, with better interior and overall a better car then a STi, But come on guys it comes at a cost of £50k or there abouts.

If I was paying a extra £25k over a STi then I would expect it to be better!

It looks better, goes better, stops better, had better paint, has a better interoir.......it's just better!

It's also a premium brand which I know some of you like.

I guess you could liken a Cayman to Warstiener and the Sti to Tesco value larger.

Even Autocar managed a 0-100 mph in 12.1 seconds on their STI PPP when it had 12k miles on it!

STis nowadays are just marketing. An O6 STi is nothing special as is on 05, 04 etc etc. They've cottoned onto marketing them better, that's all.

They're 265-300hp, fairly heavy, 4wd saloon cars. They're good, but they're not sportscars. Only reason people think they're very quick is they flatter poor drivers.

6-7 years ago, STis were quick. Now they're nothing special, as has been the case with Subaru, other manufacturers have moved on and Subaru haven't.

What is to compare, they are totally different cars, one based on a 4 door family car and the other is a 2 seater sports car.

About as pointless as comparing a Mondeo to an MX5

The power delivery on the Scoob will make it feel twice as quick as the Cayman.

2nd Craig's opinion.

Its great Subaru brought Sti's to the masses, but in doing so diluted the essence of what made them special, but taking out the hard edge to them and softening them a little for the UK market.

Its a compromise I suppose as not everyone what's a hardcore motor to drive as an every day car.
