Default M5

I got to go for a spin in my mates new M5 last night, he changed from a fully loaded 535d.

Honestly I believe he's wasted the best part of 25k.

Although it was very very nice, i just wasn't impressed as much as I believed I would be.

Friday I was out shooting some footage of another mates Supra twin turbo. This was rolloing roaded and was about 450horses. This scared the life out of me. Every time he touched the throttle. It's an auto and he was drifting sideways out of smooth bend and it was accelerating and sideways like crab on acid. He paid £7.5k my other mate spent £55k+. Bang per buck the supra made the bemmer fell slow which was very odd.

Personally I prefered his 535d it had enough torque to pull the car in half and the auto felt very good. Got out of his M5 and felt I had a few extra peices of vertebrae now laying lose in my neck. He spent 10mins berating the box and how much better the M3 one was he'd had.

In fact considering the car the thing that was the most impressive and he enjoyed demonstrating with great gusto was the seats. It is very cool when you corner with a bit of determination they inflate to hold you steady with such response vigor you'd think it was some fat thai birds fingers giving you the once over.

I just felt dissapointed that I got a ride in a 200mph super saloon and I was most impressed with a gimickey seat.

Pity really

Anyone else had a ride in one of these and felt slightly dissapointed or was it just a hang over from the japanese beast.

I know some one who regrets buying an M5 after having a go in the 535d. What crazy world. I've seen a few M6's at the weekend they look stunning, but so does the £76k price tag
Im a big fan of M cars, I used to have a Dakar Yellow 3.0 M3. I regret selling that car. I do fancy a E46 M3 Steel Grey with Red leather . Im jus waiting till the V8 comes out and the E46 prices drop.

I think it's been commented on several times that the 535D has similar torque to an M5 (especially if it's been chipped)

535d owners seem to really like them. The residuals seem excellent (unfortunately for me!)

I honestly believe the 535d was better when you take into consideration of cost etc and the way it drove for a deisel was stunning. I wouldn't ever invest in a beemer, prob cos I can't afford the one I'd have which would be the 535d. Dont get me wrong his m5 is a cracking motor, but give me a choice of his m5 and my typeR. I think I would keep the scoob and have conservatory. I dont do many motorway miles and where I live the M5 would have probs keeping up, his words not mine... Every time I get in the scoob she makes me giggle at some point along the journey. And after owning her for 4 years I find that the most satisfying part. And as I paid 18k brandnew all importing done and SVA'd it feels like I've got my moneys worth.

The worst part about this story is my mate walks to work and does about 7k per year. He bought a new fireblade once, owned it for 2 years lent me it for two weeks and I put more mileage on it in those couple of weeks than he did in the 2 years. He loves his toys and I think he just enjoys the "Oh yeah I've got an ........" part of it rather than everytime he wakes up looks forward to the blast to the office.

He's a lucky fellow, cost really isn't an issue and he'll have the best he can afford more than what might be the most suitable, maybe I shouldn't have dumped his wife when we were teenagers and I'd have one now.

Still he's a very good mate cos he all ways lets me have a go.
Think he learnt his lesson with his blade though, he wont lend me his cars.....

I just had my RS6 saloon Re-mapped to 510 bhp and it has exactly the power to weight of the new M5 but with 4WD and a beatifully appointed interior.
for £32K including re-map and Milltek, it is an awsomely accomplished and brutally fast car.

Cool

I think that the M5 is an awesome piece of kit. The more you drive it, the better it gets. It is only after a few goes of it that you fully appreciate its true breadth of talent.

I think it is worth every penny.

Oh, and it makes my 05 STI PPP feel like its turbos goosed when i get back in after a shot.

Oh, and it is a beautifully engineered car that hides speed remarkably well........ possibly a little better than a 10 to 15 year old supra !

Anyway, the people who buy these cars do not mind paying the money. Why buy a tar boiler and save money when you can have an M5????

All my opinion.

Bob.

Yeah - I'd always base a car purchase on some random comments for a SN member

I take the point that there is the law of diminishing returns with expensive cars but I can't believe you weren't impressed by its power compared to a chipped Supra. The M5 is faster in a drag than a F430/Gallardo/ 996TT etc.

With all supersaloons I don't think you are wowed the first time you drive it. Its when you get to know the breadth of its abilities, ie speed, comfort, handling, space, practicality that you really appreciate what a monumental achievement it is.

To say you would rather have the type R and the change doesn't make sense because the type R can't do the things the M5 can ie 4 doors, big boot, space for 4 grown adults to travel 200 miles in comfort

For driving kicks and even lap times, a standard STI Type R takes a lot of beating. I saw the other day that the STI 3 was 8:11 around the ring, and that is a nine year old car now. Trouble is the greater depths to a car such as space, comfort, build quality seem to come at ever cheaper prices these days, take a while to appreciate as they are not in your face like performance, whereas monumental performance seems expensive if you try and combine the lot in one car?

The M5 can keep up with the F430 whilst carrying 5 people. Nuff said.

probably not. It may average about 300 mile / tank, but flat out i doubt it would make 100 miles <lpg might help the range though ?!?!

The new M5 is a mighty impressive car, but you'd be pretty daft to spend your own money on one over a 535d.

Old shape M5's are very cheap now, but are starting to look very dated, and now being bought by low-brow owners who'll bring down the image further still.

Autocar reckoned the 535d was possibly 'the best car in the real world'...

Im buying an M5 in a couple of months,so that makes them a great car to own .
As someone has already pointed out the M5 probably delivers greater speed than the supra in a more subtle way.
When i had my little pulsar which kicked out just under 400bhp it sounded and felt like i was taking off in a little rocket but when i was taken for a blast in my mates GTR i didnt get quite the same effect. The car wasnt slower by any means ,the power was just delivered in a more sedate manor.Give your mates M5 a bit more time,i reckon it will grow on you.

Can it really?! Where is the article, video to prove this. I think the new M5 is an awsome looking piece of kit but I'll raise my eyebrow if it can actually match an f430 from 0-150mph

Just looked it up. M5 has 30bhp more (roughly) but around 400kg more to lug, I guess a less aerodynamic shape and it doesn't have an engine over the rear end to help with initial traction. 0-150mph my money is on the f430 although I accept its not going to be by much

Ferrari F430 is tops out at 196
BMW M5 tops out at 205 (unrestricted).

Ferrari has 490 bhp

BMW has 507 BHP

Ferrari weighs 1520 kgs

BMW weighs 1821 kgs

Hmmm
