Default Golf gt tdi oil usage

My dad brought a brand new gt tdi golf last year and so far, he's had to put quite a lot of oil in top it up, seems more than you'd expect to have to put in.

He says it starting to use a bit less now it's been run in (currently on 6.5k).

Has anyone else got one, and had to regularly top the oil up?

I had the Mk 4 Golf TDi PD130 for nearly 3 years, bought new. During the 23,000 miles I owned it, I put in less than a litre.

I did drive it fairly gently though, rarely going over 2500rpm and usually cruised at just below 2000 rpm. The only time I noticed a drop was after I drove with the cruise control set to 100mph for about 2 1/2 hours across europe. It need about 1/3 of a litre after that.

I had a golf 150 tdi and that used oil i now have a Vw Transporter 2.5 174ps and that uses oil too, i asked at the Vw dealer and they said that they can use up to a litre every 1000 mile when they are new, but they tend to use less after about 10k, dont worry about it its quite normal.

Yeah, I should of said I don't think it's necessarily a problem - in fact I think the handbook mentions oil usage of up to 1ltr per 1000 miles. I was just really surprised how my one never seemed to. I did treat it very gently though - I think in 2000 miles I averaged over 55 mpg!

The PDs actually use more oil if they're driven gently.

The factory fill is the 506.01 full synthetic which is very slippery, so the car needs to be driven hard to get the rings to seat properly.

Tell yer dad to take it out, warm it up thoroughly and then take it to 4,000rpm in 2nd, 3rd, 4th using a good amount of throttle, repeat several times over. It will help seat the rings.

Yep, our 23,000 mile Sharan uses a bit, economical on Diesel but the oil is pricey !

4000 rpm....the old boy won't like the sound of that

I'll have to do it for him....

Sorry, i should have been clearer. The PDs are known for using more oil if they are not RUN IN firmly, using plenty of revs & throttle -- it's quite commonly reported on the VAG / Skoda / Seat forums.

But you can run 'em in anytime

No worries mate, I knew what you were saying.

My dad thinks 2500 rpm is pushing the engine....he's old though

It's nowhere near run in at 6.5k. Driven properly, the engine should keep getting better up to 40 or 50k miles.
