Default Reliable, comfortable car for 3-4k.

Looking for the above after I sell my scooby. Something atleast as big as a ford focus. Been to car auctions before, so may do so when the time comes. Looking for atleast mid 30's mpg.
Don't mind a diesel, just not a very slow one!
Basically, something that looks tidy, goes ok and won't bite my arm off with repair bills.
Any ideas?

Mondeo. Doesn't really look 'tidy' though you would be getting a good car for little money.

Old shape Audi A4?

Probably get a late 90's 1.8 for that money, and that should return 30-35mpg and be reliable and comfy.

saab 9000 Aero. 225bhp 35 mpg. For your budget you could get the best of the best and have some cash left over!

[ChefDude: Just bought myself a prelude VTEC, I keep expecting it to talk!!]

Another vote for a Saab 9k. Preferably an Aero. The more time passes the more I realise it just never seems to break down even with 310bhp it still does 33mpg and goes looney when required.... downside - it's an 'old' car these days.
Well inside your lower budget though.

What about an Omega Elite... No real street cred, but from experience they are hugely reliable if serviced properly and have more kit than you can shake a stick at.

Cheers,

eh saabs. Purleease. They are nothing but rebadged and recurgitated vauxhalls with other parts of the horrible GM sin bin family. And 35mpg is a joke out of any saab with over 200hp.

Check out some focus volvo s40's and VW golfs.

No part of a Saab 9000 has anything whatsoever to do with Vauxhall. The 9-3 and 9-5 are a different matter, but saying they are "nothing but rebadged and recurgitated vauxhalls" is a tad exaggerated.

Many 9000 2.3 Aero drivers do get over 30mpg (225BHP). My old 220BHP 9000 Carlsson used to average 27mpg - I used to boot that every time I drove it. Many 9-5 Aero drivers (250BHP) also get over 30mpg and up to 35mpg. (Though if I had one I doubt I'd be out of the mid 20's!)

Well all the news ones are by products of the horrible GM. As for geting 35mpg out of an engine producing 250hp I will need eveidence to belive.

No other manufacturer out there as managed such a thing in a car that doesnt weigh next to nothing.

Even some diesels have trouble getting that kind of economy and to say a GM engine can do it is far fetched.

It's EASY. All you have to do is not push the accellerator pedal all the way down.

Yeah thats all very nice but you can get 70+ mpg out of a VW polo when cruising along at a near constant speed.

In everyday life your not getting 35+ mpg out of any car with over 200hp. Not even the japanese have managed that yet.

Kind have have to grudigngly agree with the man, I mean if you have a 250 bhp Saab how the hell will you resist putting your foot down to paste Audi's and BMW's !

Saab 9-3 LPT for 2 grand, plus 500 quid remap and you have a 220 bhp beast, at least in straight rather smoky lines due to traction issues with 195 tyres.

That's a bit like saying Audi's are nothing more than rebadged and recurgitated Skoda's isn't it?

Cheers

you'd be hard pressed to find a manufacturer that isn't involved in some sort of platform sharing.

Buy a nice Bentley or save yourself a wedge of cash (and lose it again in depreciation) and buy yourself a VW Phaeton.
