Not an expert but 286bhp for the older cars and 321 for the EVO's.

Brilliant cars, excellent rear wheel drive handling, for the money a great buy.
If I was shelling out £5K on that sort of car it would be for an M3......

Mate just bought a cracking Dakar yellow example for that money too.

Vanos needs to be cleaned out pretty regular else a big fat bill, but other than that they are ok,.

There is a gorgeous silver one for sale in the for sale section on here.

Thumbs up

3.0L straight six, 286bhp from L reg to N reg

3.2L straight six, 321bhp from N reg to T reg. (Evolution).

The Evo has double vanos, better brakes and uprated suspension. From 1996 the car was revised, more rounded grill basically.

I think one of the biggest gripes was the handling, apparenty not what an M3 "should" be. I was 19 when I had mine and couldn't drive it properly so can't really comment - though I thoght it was great - and on full chat was thunderously fast!!!!

Both cars available in saloon and Coupe. I must admit to liking the saloon more.....sorry. Though the saloon has slightly softer suspension to cater for the slightly less rigid chassis. the saloon has less supportive seats and a walnut interior, the coupe's are more chav. Just kidding.

IMO best car you'll get this side of 20 grand with everything considered.

Love 'em.

Im eyeing them up aswell atm......thinking about getting one!

Anyone got a break down on their M3 running costs?? I wonder how it would fair compaired to my old classic Scoob (260bhp) - not performance (I know there 2 very different cars!) but with costs!?

I know the vanos can be very expensive to fix if it goes **** for elbow, is there anything else that you need to watch for??

Spark plugs. The coil packs run very high voltages and as such eating a plug is common occurance, not to mention expensive when you have to replace the lot at 70 quid a go.
I recall being told how someone put a new set in at a start of a track day and had to replace em all over again when the day was over has he'd lunched them during the day.
