Default Rover 820 Vitesse Turbo

Been offered one of these for a very small amount of cash.

What are they like and do they eat head gaskets, fall to bits as other rovers?

What's performance like?

I had a rover 820 years ago and it fell to bits but this looks in good nick.

I know you'll slag them but this one's cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeap and I belive they put out a decent bit of power?

Is it the Vitesse or the Vitesse Sport? The Sport is a much better prospect driving wise. Reliability wise I wouldn't ask about either

I had a 420 GSI turbo, and **** me it was an animal.

Would have eaten my standard WRX. Torque steer everywhere but loads of fun.

The previous owner had upped the boost, and had a straight through exhaust.

Full leather etc.

Sold it for about £300 in the end

I know the motor in the 820 is in a softer tune than in the 220 turbo etc, IIRC its 180bhp and about 175lb-ft so probably better for reliability.

I had a 1995 620ti and that blew its head gasket at 2500 miles. Rover were good enough to exchange the car and the replacement was superb....right up to the day when it was nicked

Not strictly true. The standard 800 Vitesse has less power but the 800 Vitesse Sport had the full 197bhp.

So are these a bad idea? I'm looking for something cheap to run around in. Theres 2 nice looking Vitesse on ebay right now for a touch over £1000.

Not bad for a 1998 car. Recaro seats look cool and is alot of car for the money.

Just the normal Vitesse.

It's in good condition.

For the money I can get it for, if it lasts me 4 months it'll still be a bargain.

I had a 420GSi years back .... I had it chipped and added Racelogic Traction Control. It was very quick and easily quicker than my current MY05 WRX PPP ! It looked nothing but surprised many .....

The problem was with high boost the spark blew out after a spirited blast so it lot power. No other spark plugs seemed to work well. It also did 2 gearboxes and a driveshaft in a year ...... covered by a very generous warranty company but I sold it for an S14 200SX.

The same engine in an 800 series Rover should be good fun - just don't expect reliability!

Lad i know had a Vitesse on a J plate. He paid £700 for it. Fully loaded spec and adjustable boost controller () Unfortunatley someone ran in to the back of him which resulted in him needing a new rear cluster and bumper, ultimately writing the car off as the light cluster was £350!!!

I was offered a Vitesse Sport 820 a few weeks ago by a mate, and he took me for a spin. For a car as big as that, they're pretty bloody quick - nice enough inside as well. Recaros, half leather and so on. It didn't seem too bad in the build quality either. Massive boot, even for a saloon.

I was thinking about it, but then he decided not to sell

Rovers are grrrrrrreat... I tried to combat the H/Gasket problem by buying one with a Honda engine.

Cheers,
