I looked at buying a GS300 sport (not sure if we're talking the same shape?) but ended up getting an E39 528i SE instead. Apparently parts are very expensive although reliablility is second to none on the whole.
As a side note the V8 in the LS400 is supposed to be one of the smoothest, most balanced engines on the market.

Drove a new GS300 auto. Impressive spec, interior, mechanical refinement was superb, ride quality was too firm considering the handling pay off wasn't there.
A typical 3 litre NA six will be considerably more fuel efficient than a Scooby.

A friend had a GS300 Sport, which I had a shot of. Amazingly smooth drive and the interior felt very high quality, he also recalls it did over 30mpg. Very linear power delivery and great for charging on with when road conditions allowed. Completely different drive to an impreza so I wouldn't consider a GS300 as an alternative or competitor, but if you fancy a fast, reliable, classy car that returns reasonable mpg.....you won't go far wrong with the lexus.
