Pah. You don't want a poncy Defender. Get yourself a proper Landy - get a Series vehicle.

Check rear cross members and the capping surrounding the tub, also the bulkhead and doors for corrosion. It's annoying, but all appart from the bulkhead are pretty easy to replace, Defenders are excellent as they really are just giant lego sets

If possible aviod one with a sunroof as it *will* leak if opened and you *will* get a soggy drivers seat! lol!

They are fanatsic vehicles, we've had a couple and now have a Camel 110, I'm reabuilding a Series 11A at the moment and love 'em

Make sure you drive one first though as the driving position it's very different to 'normal' vehicles, if you find it difficult a classic rangie or disco might be better.

Check out http://forums.lr4x4.com , they're a friendly bunch

Had mine since summer, still makes me laugh every time I drive it. Make sure you give the diff lock selector a good going over, saying that I fixed mine with a lump of wood in the field and the replacement link was 89p.

Got enough spotlights there? Looks like a nice one

I'm just thinking about a Defender as well - preferably a LWB hard top, but I'd have to sell the car, so not quite sure as yet

...now that all depends on what you want to use it for!

£5k doesn't go far on a defender, but if you look around you should find a good one.

100" wheelbase is considered the best for off-roading, but there's very few 100" Defenders... the '90' is what's usually used for off roading in Defender circles (91" wheelbase) and the 110 is the usual family vehicle, although I did my LANTRA off road training in a 110 as they're more capable than most will accept if you're careful!

Soft tops are fun in the summer and freezing in the winter, truck cabs are claustrophobic and not good for carrying the shopping and County Station Wagons have carpets, so avoid if you're wanting too off-road! lol! (they smell and go mouldy if you're not careful with how much water you go through)

All a case of finding one to suit you really, Landy's come in all shapes and sizes so find one you like the look of and go and have a drive

Main things to look for on an early one are rust, and lots of it- but at least it'll be obvious! Make sure to crawl under it and have a good poke at the chassis underneath.

One main concern on the earlier models as well is the extent to which they suffer from galvanic corrosion where the aluminum body panels mix with steel members where they havent been properly coated at the factory and the aluminium turns to a white powder.
