Default What car for £400

I'm soon to embark on a bit of fun.

The scoob is going and being replaced with Sheds ....... £400 sheds. Well £300 if posiible but I will stretch to £400 at a push

So what would you be looking at? I wont 10 months MOT at the least, not worried about tax. I want tanks, big and solid.

I dont need a car really, can walk to work if it breaks down.......If I get 6 months from the car without spending a penny on it im happy. In that time it will do about 2,000 miles.

Guy at work is trying to sell me his Audi coupe GT for around £400 which is interesting......

Other thoughts

XR4i ........
5 series
320/323/325i
Volvo
Audi 100
capri

Local auto trader is gonna be my new subscription I think

at this level of spend it's probably worth getting yourself down the local car auctions...your £400 will buy you something that may potentially reach £1K on a nasty used forecourt...may need a few quid here and there but sounds like you know your motors and so shouldn't get stung with a scrapper..

You should get a really good 205 GTi for £400.
You can get all kinds of POS for that kind of money.

French stuff turns up pretty cheaply at auction.

my last runnabout was a pug 405td estate. N-reg, Aircon, electric everything, loads of room for carting stuff to the tip etc. 6 months MOT and a bargain for £150. I had to replace the waterpump a few weeks back, but that was pretty minor I thought.
Its failed its MOT and would cost way more than its worth to repair so is now on ebay. I went back to the auctions to get a replacement and came home on Thursday with an S-reg pug 406 estate. Its only a 1.8 perol, but its got full sevice history, seems even bigger inside than the 405 and again all the toys. Flawless bodywork apart from a ding on the front edge of the bonnet, and drives perfectly. Not too shabby for £480.

Less desireable stuff goes even cheaper. big stuff like XM`s often struggle to reach £100.

An early Mondeo is a good buy -- galvanised body so rust isn't an issue, OK if the cambelt goes you're screwed but otherwise they are pretty bulletproof especially the 1.8 and 2.0 jobs.

Surely a mid-90s early Vectra will cost about 50p now.

Citroen ZXs and early Pug 306s are dirt cheap too.

I had a free Xantia HDi in the yard with a dead engine. I've just fitted a new engine (£200) and just need to sort a niggle with the suspension and I'll have a £300 silver French hearse

Anyhoo - if your a competent mechanic, this is a bargain

Mk2 Golf. Regular or GTi, theyre great cars and if you looked hard you'd probably get a really well looked after one for the money, which is likely to last and last.

Seeing that this is turning into a "sh!tbox For Sale" thread...I think I'll have a punt.....

I have a FREE Astramax 1.6 EFi petrol that needs a loving home.

Needs new sills, bit of welding on the rear spring hanger and a new Dizzy - cost in parts £300max (new dizzy is about £200). Straight forward fix for a decent welder.

Crying shame, as it has nice paint work (nightfire red, looks very tidy) and one owner from new with 60K miles with FSH. Plus it goes like stink (when the dizzy is working ) - weighs eff all (I can push start it single handed) and it has a 1.6Efi engine, so you can work out teh power to weight ratio

If it's a bigger car you're after have at look at this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1986-Mercedes-...QQcmdZViewItem

Sort the fuel pump and you've a bit of cheap luxury for the price of a full night in Amsterdam LOL.
