Question The Wife's Golf is poorly..

mk2 J reg 1.6 Ryder.
its a bgreat little car, but it really doesnt like cold mornings, in fact, it rarely starts when its cold.
Come back at lunchtime and it fires up no bother.
I put my subaru battery in to check it wasnt that, it wasnt.
Alternator must be fine as it starts when its not taters outside.

another symptom is that recently it started making a clicking noise when you try to start it and its cold.

any ideas please as she wants a new car

Yup, sounds like the starter is playing you around!

Sounds like the starter solenoid sticking - had the same problem on an couple of fiat unos a long time ago... I kept a hammer and a piece of wood in the car so I could open the bonnet and give it a thump to free it up, but you may prefer to get it fixed

My Golf did the same thing years back. I got a recon one for next-to-nothing and replaced it. Only two bolts I believe, but the starter motor acts as a gearbox mount so you'll need to support both engine and gearbox when replacing it - but very easy
