Default k series engine - anyone rebuilt one?

as per title really. rebuilt mine after a cracked liner but totally unsure about these floating liners - how the heck do you set the depth (or more importantly the protrusion into the head?)

Yep, your right to be careful about that, mine had sunk and thats pretty much game over as it then pressurises the water jacket, also the thing about the S1 Elise owners is just plain wrong,

Its S1 Elise owners
MGF Owners
Rover 200 BRM/VVi owners
and a few others.

Good engine ruined by a big design flaw,

the engine has been great for the last year, taken hell from me, revving out at 8k all the time.

it then cracked a liner (#4) - engine was cold, i redlined it (dont ask). i thought this is what caused the problem.

rebuilt engine, all new liners, bearings, etc.

10 seconds of running, total loss of compression on #3. just stripped it all back down, #3 liner is now cracked. no idea why or how.

gutted!

Just bought a complete engine out of an MGF 10k miles with warranty for 3 months £500 plus VAT from hills salvage Skelmesdale ,so it's not worth the hassle doing a rebuild !

Best way to overcome this is to send the block to Scholar Engineering in Suffolk. For £350 + VAT they will intereference fit new liners (not the standard Rover ones), and machine the deck of the block and the liner tops to ensure correct liner protrusion. As the liners are then an interference fit, they can't drop and so the protrusion will not change.

If you want to go further, they can take the block out to 1900cc at the same time with new pistons. I've just built one of these 1900 and it produced 212bhp and 170 lbft torque.

yeah, the k series has been in the midget for over a year.

people slag the k series a lot, but most problems are either due to installation (blown HG on MGF) or plastic headdowels and crappy original HG's.

I've put a fair few miles on it and used/abused at track/hillclimb events and have had the rev limiter at 7750 for most of the time on std internals and until it cracked a liner (which was on a cold engine getting too much abuse!) it has been a great engine.

it looks like this other liner cracked due to something getting into the cylinder.

i've been meaning to put up a new site for over a year, only had the 1500 rebuild/reshell details up. pulled it down now, so must get a new site up.

all my ramblings are on www.mgcars.org.uk under message board then twin cam and k series conversions.

there are quite a few on ant's k register now.
