Oil burner - what have I missed?
As I am:
A. Tight.
B. Looking to buy my own place.
C. Spending spare cash on my track car.
D. Bored of going to the petrol station.
E. ...of the opinion that a road car is simply a means to an end and nothing more....
...I want a DIESEL!!!!
Now: 8 grand ish, 50mpg combined, 4 seats, comfortable, good performance.
Looked at Golf, Passat, Vectra (new shape).
What have I missed??
N.B. No Mondeo's please. We have a pool car and as nice as it is to drive - it's flimsy and ****e.

Would you have to borrow money to get your 15 mpg more?
Not sure how long that would take before you realise any payback.
£200 a month loan would go a long way towards a mortgage.

8 grand - no loan. Any more, then yes, loan required. Though, would have it paid off within a few months the amount of overtime I'm currently getting.
I want a reliable car, new ish.
Bora - I'd prefer a Passat or Golf for the money.
Vectra - I like the 2.2 SRi DTI.
Seat - the TDi Cupra is a great car, a mate has one but a bit pricey and wouldn't want the basic Leon really.
Passat 130TDi looks promising I must admit. Quickest, and most efficient!!!
Audi - pricey, plus I find the A3 very dull looking, even compared to the Vectra.
Avensis - err, tell me more....
Mazda6 - "I don't like it".

Weren't you going on about a Superb before?
Listen, spending 8k on a car when you need a deposit for a house is not sound financial planning!

Octavia for value maybe? Something French would be cheaper - Pug 307 Hdi or summat - but perhaps there's only so much of that sort of thing a man can take.

You could get a Golf TDI for less than £8k, if you are willing to look at the lower powered options.
The Golf TDI 130 will be in budget, but near the top end. It would be difficult to find a Golf TDI 150 at your budget without high mileage.
Boras are cheaper, so you may be able to get a newer car for your money, but IMHO not as good looking as the Golf, Leon, Octavia, etc.

Superb is a long wheel based Passat, so no it's longer.

Which reminds me, went to take it out on Sunday. After re-charging the flat battery it started first fire. After nearly a quarter of a year without it being touched!!!

Not sure about sound... a diesel is never gong to be brilliant in that department. My brother in law has a Passat (1.8t) and loves it, apart from fuel consumption. Octavia too small then?

Once run-in (i.e. about 25,000 miles ) Passat PD130 is very quiet apart from cold starts on winter mornings, but Shell Diesel Extra / BP Ultimate do cut the noise quite a lot. At m/way cruise the engine is very quiet, bit louder at peak rpm but you don't need to take it that far very often.
There should be lots of the just-replaced Passats coming onto the market soon. The pick is the Sport (20mm lowered suspension, hi-torque engine, 6-speed box, climate, 6CD in-dash changer etc).
I've had mine for 3 years, averaged a real 47mpg in 40K miles, total problems one blown brake light bulb.
Nice solid interior, handling is safe but uninspiring, long-distance comfort really good, torque is great.

I agree with davyboy, you should put that £8k into the house thus reducing your mortgage payments, then get yourself something cheap to run about in.
I bought a crappy old Rover when we bought our first house just to get me to work, but it reduced the mortgage bills.
You could buy something decent for £2k, like a 98 model Primera or something, 40mpg, toys, comfort, reliability.
