What should I get...Octavia 1.8T 4X4, Bora/Passat V64Motion or Galant V6 Sport
Hello to all
After having major problems with an Octavia 1.8t 4X4 and finally getting my money back!!! I am contemplating getting another one but I cannot get hold of a suitable one for maximum £7500. I am trying to get one from a Skoda Dealership. The other options I have is a Bora or Passat V64Motion, Mitsu Galant V6 Sport which seem okay but I do not know much abou them. I know that Ocatvia 1.8T have a lot of tuning potential and I think V64 Motions do but not sure about the Mitsus. Any sdvice

I have a MY2000 Galant 24v Sport manual and it is a great car.
Performance is good with loads of torque have seen 140 indicated and not flat out off the mark it feels fast, i kept up with a Leon Cupra R with no bother for several traffic light GP's for a bit of sport a while back. Handling is pretty good for a big car, it is somewhere between a 3-5 series BM size wise but handles like a smaller car with little roll and quite agile it likes to be pushed through the bends and rewards for this.
Build is again pretty good everything works in mine, the climate control is fab. no rattles or squeaks.
I can get 32-33MPG on a run and average 30, except around town when it drops to 27-28. i usually get 300 miles per 46 litres. The 2.5 24v is reconed t5o be better on fuel than the 2.0l 16v. The engine sounds great andf pulls cleanly up to the (just under)7k redline.
Brakes are OK in std form although i will upgrade when i need to do the pads.
The gearbox is the only problem i have had at 92K which i got rebuilt for
£ 300.00.
I recon the are cheap reliable fun and a bit of a 'q' car
as for the others i like the 1.8t engine very reliable and tuneable and with VAGs build quality.
I think you wil find the Galant a lot more rare and a better drive allround.

The V6 4-motion's are quite quick, but theres not that much tuning potential because they arent turbocharged. Theyre also quite thirsty, Ive got a mate with a Golf V64 and it only returns low-mid 20's MPG. Bora's are surprisingly small inside, very tight in the back.
Skoda Octavia would still be my choice of the bunch, its basically a bigger Bora - lots of tuning potential (my mate in a TVR 4.5 Chimaera got a shock when one of these tried to keep up with him, and did a surprisingly good job!! - must have been heavily tuned) also good MPG returns when youre on a run.

Thanks again for that...I have considered the 540 but in my price range would mean a high miler and I would really prefer a 4WD since having my Legacy Turbo...never had one hairy moment in it except once when I must have gone over some oil!!!

the V6 galant is only Fwd , but it has a very well sorted chassi that never seems to get unstuck even in the wet , i have never ever felt less than 100% confident in the car , even when giving it 100% . a few of our club members from CVR4 go to the 'ring quite regularly mainly in vr4's but one v6 does go along and spends most of the time really embarissing its twin turbo brothers , all i can say is get a test drive and see what you think . the other option is register on club vr4 and say what you are after and there may even be a member nearby who will take you for a spin in theirs
