Default Green Cotton Air filters on M5

Anyone used these cone kits before?

I was gonna sell the car but its in the dealers getting a new engine fitted under warranty and so i think it would be wise to keep it now for sure.

I see that they are £104 for the E39 5.0 M5, which is dirt cheap in comparison to other carbon fibre kits around £700. £104 for the pair is cheap as its got an air box on each bank of the engine.

If i can get the airflow right then it would be a cheap way of getting a few extra ponnies.

Anyway just thought if anyone had used em as no one has used em on the bmw forums.

It will certainly sound nice.

Not sure if it will aid or hinder the engine though, as some cars benefit and others dont.

I reckon that the M5 is probably pretty well set-up already... so would assume that there will only be an increase in noise rather than power.

Will probably void any warranty that you might have from the new engine too...

Cheers,

You could try a cotton sock http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=474068

I'd go for the carbon Gruppe M stuff. Lush quality and the engine would benefit better. I'd cast a boubt on anyother stuff out there. If it's a Bimmer then it has to be Gruppe M

Its the price of these things. 700 quid plus, for air filters.

To be honest, unless your going for the Gruppe M stuff, there is no point repacing the standard plastic boxes with a cone. Just replace the panel filter in the standard box with an uprated one. Having open cones under any bonnet is a definite no no.

If you notice, after being stuck in traffic for a while, the M5 can feel a little sluggish to pick up once the traffic clears. This is due to the positioning of the air intake temp sender. There is a whole thread on the M5board about moving this nearer the front of the car, so that it doesn't get affected by heat soak. That modification, coupled with new filters would be a better bet.

Finally, if you can afford the Gruppe M or Dinan CAI mod, that seems to work well.

Cheers
Matt

Keep the filters standard BMW,others are a waste of money.

Most aftermarket 'performance' filters are oil soked and can ruin the MAFs.
