Default Big engine, big estate...thoughts?

I've just sold be beloved M Coupe as I need something a little larger...two dogs in an MC is a bit a squeeze. The MC was and is an awsome car and whilst I know it's a tall order to find anything that'll be half as much fun I would like something with a bit of 'go'!

Considerations have been an E39 540 Touring or an Audi 4.2 A6 Avant. 2000/2001 vintage.

Anyone own or owned one of these mile munchers? Any insight welcome.

Thanks in advance
Tony

Both are great dog chariots and extremely practical. Make sure find either with ALL the options. I have a "6" and are very please with it coming from an E46 330ci vert and a scoob

You can get E55 AMG estates for very resonable money these days, may be worth a look.

Isn't the Stegea ultra rare and therefore ££££. I have about 12.5K give or take...

I've spotted a fully loaded 4.2 A6 at a dealer. They want 13.9 but I'm sure they'll negociate for cash!!!???

I'd go for a new 330i Touring. Boring choice but a wonderful car. Especially nice when fully loaded up with all the options.

Alternatives perhaps an ST220 (absolutely massive) but it does have some downsides as discussed in earlier threads.

Volvo V70R

My mate has just bought one of these and for a big car its astounding.

Dont bother with the T5. The V70R is awesome.

It out handles both my scoob and my best mates EVO 6 GSR.

power wise there is not much in it but one of these would murder a standard STI.

Mine is around 350bhp and I pull away from him but only just. Although he has bought a device that replaces the standard map.

So go and test drive one and see what you think.

They understeer like a pig on anything other than bone dry tarmac, and chew fuel brakes and tyres like a scoob on acid

How about a late W124 E Class, either a 280 or a 320, they both go like stink, can be acquired for very reasonable money (a lot less than your £12.5K ceiling), and as many a mediterranean taxi driver will attest, peerless build quality means they will go forever

I've spotted an A6 4.2 Quattro Avant. Fully toyed up, X plater, 59K and bang on the guide price.

I'm off to see it as soon as the buyer of my M Coupe passes over the readies.

Hi evolution the VR4 looks nice!
Unusual to see one without the 'Momo' wheel with the red bits however the interior of that one also has the wood spec not carbon fibre.

it was an option i believe, but IMO, the red momo wheel was a nice wheel, it just looked tacky.

The seats are comfortable, yet they do give good support.

Its also the tiptronic, INVECS II 5speed, nice n easy to use i gather, only used the FTO 4 speed myself and was a bit of a pain. Its 60mph + accelaration is unreal and those wheels really set the car off. Hes just had it down to Advanced Automotive Systems in Newcastle for yet another exhaust, gone for the origional oval style and hes well pleased with it.

If i ever need a big car, this will be high up on the short list.

Cheers

John

A Volvo isn't very good around the bends, irrespective of the marketing - lol.

Still it is the car i would have for that cash. They are faultless really, unless you need to have a German badge ?

The (RB26DET 2,600cc) Nissan Stagea that youre referring to wasnt a series-production car Im afraid (and the four wheel drive system in all Stageas is quite different too). The 'RS Four' is four wheel drive with a 235PS RB25DET engine which is essentially a slightly detuned Skyline GTS-T TypeM engine. Its a sizable wagon but the power density is only 6.9; which isnt especially impressive; it is a 1700 kilo car though.....

On the plus side a 1996 model is worth bugger-all in Japan...

I can't believe that nobody is on singing the praises of the new Legacy Spec B (JDM) with the latest 2.0 twin scroll turbo engine. I viewed one on Autotrader for £18K, or a new one is approx £27K at DH cars. Excellent size with all the Subaru good points that you would expect.
