Why not?

Cheap as chips to buy second hand & vfm. Costs a bit to run but its a running expense.

I used to run a Scorpio 4x4 (2.8i) as a courier vehicle. Well comfy & could get in loads of stuff AND I could make good money using it

Been in a scorpio taxi too... can't understand it. Surely a Mondeo diesel would fit the bill!

But diesels normally carry a premium when buying where as big engined cars are really cheap. So evens itself out.

I had a few rides home in a Subaru Impreza turbo (fully stickers up with rally decals) taxi from Bristol - must have been 4-5years back when they were desirable.

It was petrol (not lpg), and the bloke used to drive it pretty hard! Got pulled for speeding in it and the guy told us to pretend we were his mates if asked, so obviously something dodgy going on!

yeah - probably picked you up on the way to a petrol station and figured he was short on cash... so what to do ..... pick up a fare and pretend he's a taxi driver

In Aberdeen, when I lived up there, I frequently saw an AMG C-class Merc with taxi plates on it There was quite a nice body-kitted Audi A6 as well which was around the place....

Suppose it's as well to have something nice, if you're going to drive it all day

Wasn't there a guy taxiing in an evo6?? I think it was in the Leamington area. Transfer times were shortened considerably

A few years ago I went to a album launch party somewhere in London. Got rather pissed and decided to walk back to my hotel. After walking for 30 mins I realised I was lost and tried to find a taxi. I asked this massive black guy if he knew where I could get a taxi. As luck would have it his "mate" parked up the road was a taxi driver.

His mate was driving the blingest Mercedes 500SEC have ever seen. Normally I would have politely declined but being knackered and very drunk I got in the car. We wheel spinned away and the guy drove like a madman around the streets of London. At one point he had the back end out smoking the tyres on the exit.

Luckily we didn't die and he only charged me a fiver

I've spoken to a couple of drivers that do long-haul trips about this. One had a 2.8 Scorpio, the other had a Senator 24V. Both were bought ex-fleet with 100K+ miles up for peanuts.

Both drivers reckoned on getting 25-ish to the gallon, spending bugger all on parts thanks to friendly MOT stations so fuel cost wasn't an issue.

Yep, most likely not insured for public carriage- if that's the right term for it.

There is a bloke in Sheffield that runs a Honda Accord Type R, and if you go to sunny Chesterfield, all the boy racers are taxi drivers, with big wheels and slammed suspension.......

Also you might be getting taxis confused with private hire, a mate of mine does executive hire in a Merc E280 which has the taxi plate on the back. Also in our workshop at the moment is an S500 taxi.

In Walsall, theres a taxi company, which has a Mercedec E55 AMG and a C32 AMG and a BMW 745i, all with tv's in the head rests, getting a taxi home after a night out can be fun, when your taxi driver shows how quick those AMG beasts can be.

slight difference between mini-cabbing and executive stuff, but i have had a 2.5 omega elite. used to give me back ache though. then got an old shape(r reg) S280 merc that gave nothing but problems so got a saab 9-5 2.3 turbo which was nice.
a friend of mine though used to run an E55amg mercedes(the 354bhp one)!!!!!!!!! he'd either get a lot of repeat business as some suits would enjoy the 130mph ride down the M1 or people that never wanted him to pick them up again LOL
