Which boring diesel estate car for £5K
Go for a Mondeo/Passat or an older E-Class?
This car will probably do no more than 5k miles per annum but needs to carry mountain bikes/rubbish to the tip, so please don't suggest that a 944 would suit me better!
Thoughts?

The usual answer would be a Golf or an Octavia. How about getting a van though. Ive just got a 2 litre turbo scudo, very very versatile.Insurance was reasonable, and you can fit a heck of a lot in the back.

if it's such low mileage, does it need to be diesel?
I really disliked a cheap Passat diesel estate I drove - felt like the front wheels were never going to move the thing, so I'd personally not consider one of those.
