Default Close to getting an M5

Started looking at getting an M5 in place of the scoob. I've binned the idea of the 140k miler (posted a couple of days ago). Now found a T plate locally with 80k, Full BMW history, Some BMW exteneded warranty remaining, loads of extras and looks the nuts!! OK got to find a bit of cash to put in with the scoob, but the more i look at it, the more it seems to make sense!! A more grown up image and more family sized car (sprog number 2 on the way), but also awesome performance!!!

I just hope i can afford the runnning costs!!!

If you're wondering, then basically you can't.

They are wonderful cars, but you'll struggle to get 20mpg, servicing is pricey (though the Four Plus option at BMW dealers does help), insurance is bad, and they eat rear tyres.

Think of Impreza running costs plus 60% and you'll not be far wrong.

Agreed. Running costs of a £60,000 car (original price), so what would you expect?!

Na, not at all.

My rears lasted 20K miles, the servicing is once every say 15K miles, and 1 in every 2 is an oil service for around 170 quid.Just ring around for service prices and you will see the difference is quite large between dealers.

Fuel is around the same, not much in it.

One thing is even though the warranty is £970, keep renewing it, not only does it cover you, but it helps in selling the car afterwards.

Try and get satnav, blinds, xenons, and facelift lights too, if u wait a month u could have mine maybe.

But with the warranty your running costs are quite well fixed.

As above, the main expenses are dealers and "if" something goes wrong. Use independent specialist and shop around for your tyres and costs can be cut down dramatically

Thanks for that!!!! I have to replace all 4 tyres on the scoob every 12-14k miles so even if the rears are £290 its not a lot more. How much do you get out of the fronts??

Definetly would extend the warranty for £970! I was wondering how much it costs. Any idea if BMW stop doing after a certain age/miles??

MPG wise, if i sit at 85mph on the motorway, i never see more than 25-26 in the scoob, what sort of figures do you get in the M5 at those sort of speeds?? I don't count mpg when hooning as it got to be expected, the scoob goes int the teens when driven in a fruity way

Send me some details on your car mate, I could be interested, i'm in no hurry. If you fancy a nice WRX in p/x i know a good one

Follow my example - I went and got the RS6, M5 is the dog's doodars. Gatmann (remember him with the white blob eye spec C?) just got one in imola red. Stunning. Excellent build quality that'll last. If your up for the occasional blast, this weapon'll do. Prob not as good as a trackday toy as the Scoob, but will feel at home at Santa Pod. I have seen several M5's hooning around at Hullavington - perfectly at home over taking the Scoobs on the straights only to lose on the corners. But still each car is different. The M5 will give immense satisfaction in areas where the scoob won't (ie feeling fresh after a long journey, headroom, legroom, usual qualities of a larger than scoob uber saloon.). Where it will fail is that it will never handle like your scooby ever did - that is true. But the M5 is still a bostin' car. I'd get one...........but I got summat else.

Remember the mpg will be crap and the car's computer will constantly remind you that you are only getting 15mpg around town

15mpg is about right for an m5 around town, you may see 20mpg on a run...they are pricey cars to run, I was going to get one, but opted for a 330ci convertible, as I dont like the idea of having to keep the car serviced by BMW stealerships just to keep the warranty valid...servicing will be hugely expensive on an m5 at the stealerships....

also parts like brakes etc cost a fortune, so unless you have a pretty flexible matainance budget, go for summaat cheaper to run....how about a remapped 530d....I know its not an m5, but they can produce some good figures...

Imola was yellow and was usually on a RS4.

I have a classic Scooby and an M5. I have had the Scooby for five years and the M5 for three months. Petrol wise the M5 is not much difference to my MY98 Scooby. Can't really comment on running costs as it's got warenty and i've not had any bills yet. I was going to sell the scoob but it's still loads of fun. Jumping from one to the other is a bit weird though.

You only live once, go for it.

My M5

I loked into one. Am I right in thinking the rear suspension bushes need changing at 80k/5 yrs? Am i right around £800 to get them done? As previously mentioned the dicsc / pads and the like put me off as far as running costs. Awesome car though.........

It all depends hows its driven the fronts should last more than the rears and they did in my case.My fronts did 30K. I got a full set(4) of continentals for £580.

There is no mileage or age restrictions with the warranty, just needs FullService history for it to be valid.

To be honest its similar mpg to the scooby

My brother p1, gives me a headache so maybe too old for a scooby.
