How reliable are high mileage VAG cars?
My Dad is thinking of getting an Audi A8 4.2 V8 Quattro Sport. He's decided that as mum never lets him have the keys to her car, he might as well buy himself something!! lol!
He wants to spend around £5500-£6000, nothing more, but mileage for these ones are all around 130,000miles (albeit with FAudiSH). Would the mileage really be a problem on this?
I would have thought that the V8 lump would be pretty strong and healthy for a long time to come yet?
Any advise welcome!!

As with the big 7 series, s classes etc., the engines are relatively unstressed as it's unlikely been driven to the redline much (they are torquey enought that they don't need to) but it's the electrics and suspension you wanna check with these type of cars as they are a) complicated and b) heavy to mucho loads on the joints etc.
Obviously do a bit of research on your particular model. I was thinking of an A8 (very nice cars) but they were too expensive so ended up with a similar aged 4.4 bmw 7 series for less cash (leaving more to spend if things go wrong!).

Thats what i was thinking, theyre unlikely to have been thrashed, and more than likely its motorway miles!
I'll mention to my dad about the electrics, thats something we hadnt thought about!
I take it a 7 series would be just as expensive to fix, but cheaper to buy?

gearboxes can be an issue also. I bought a 100k A6 Quattro for 6 Grand some time ago and within 3 months the gearbox went Bang Cost me 1500 quid to put it right and that was re-con fitted and sourced by a friend of a friend for pound notes !!!!!
Bloody Shame as it was one hell of a nice motor !
It's all in the luck of the draw I reckon.

Pretty much. Although there are more 7 series to choose from hence cheaper (more on the market). I've got a mate whose sorting out the wishbones on mine, he knows bmws well and is doing them at a LOT less than bmw's £100 hour ripoff!! There will be less people able to work on the A8s.
Also, A8's aluminium everywhere which is harder to sort if crashed/dented etc.
If in doubt, get a car check (aa type thing) to see what's wrong with any prospective purchase.
Personally I'd go the A8 route if he can afford it. I would have if they were the same price as the 7s.

Yeah, he does seem quite keen on the A8's, so think he will take this route if its feesable! Interesting about the Beemers though, might suggest those to him....
Does anyone know what the power and performance figures are on the A8 4.2? Need to know if he's gonna be faster than my Impreza!! lol!
Listy, was that a Manual or Auto box?

Audi's are good cars - and as long as the AA checks it out you should be fine. Performance wise they are not too bad <7 seconds 0-60 can be acheived and <16 1/4 mile performance. On a par with post classic WRX performance to 100 then probably STI from 100 - 130 then STI PPP to 155 - lol..........
