Did you ground the sump out? A mate of mine has a mark 3 golf with that engine fitted and has broken the sump twice & he bought a passat that someone had done the same to recently and I know someone who did it to a Skoda Octavia RS

Don't know the car at all, but it sounds like a big leak from a pressurised part of the oil system. Has it got an oil cooler with external piping? Or maybe the oil filter became unscrewed or disconnected somehow. Certainly could be around the turbo as well.

Tell us what they find.

It's sounding like a catostrophic engine failure to me...i.e piston rod flying out the engine

Cause is usually starvation through leakage/oil burning, pressure relieve valve failure or neglect.

Have previously seen 1.8Ts that has suffered oil pressure problems due to excess silicone sealant (used for sump etc) clogging the oil pick up. If left unobserved catostrophic failure is guaranteed.
