Thinking of getting a cheapish track car that will also be used as a runabout. Nothing hardcore, just something thats reliableish and not out of place on a track. I wont be peeling stickers off etc to save weight
, just remove rear seats and spare wheel.
My thoughts are a 306 gti aka "****box"
Or a Mr2 turbo. Perhaps a little too wild for me
I have around 2.5 to spend. Ive thought about a 205 but TBH these things are knocking on quite a bit now.
Anybody have any thoughts on this subject, Im a track virgin, hence the low budget.

get a Clio 16v with 2.0 bottom end... we went to Donnington the other weekend for a trackday and the Clio's were the fastest cars overall round track that day... by some way... oh, the extremely well driven M3 CSL was also rather fast, but bit more than £2.5k iirc

mx5 / eunos (has lsd).
cheap, bulletproof, and above all, fun
you can drive it there and back, have sideways fun if its damp (or dry if you're really trying) and its unlikely to break.
french toys inevitably spend at least 30% of their life on the aa wagon, and I speak from experience, unless you are very lucky, and although some of the guys on here swear by them fwd just doen't 'do' it for me.

if you must go front wheel drive you can buy an ex-cup clio race car for circa £3k but bear in mind you will have to trailer it unless you make it road legal. the photo above was of one of my clio's- this one was a race winner in 93 and 94- I sold it last year for £4000, and it only had 1200 miles on it (genuine!)

the 944's are excellent, you can have loads of fun for relatively little cash. nicely balanced, and very adjustable on the throttle. good choice, although can be expensive if it breaks, and get rather hot inside!

Its important to know where your £2.5K budget begins and ends. What kind of running costs are you looking at, what kind of mods do you want to do.
If £2.5K is the purchase price and then mods ontop then buy something like a gti6 or Eunos. If £2.5K is the all in price than a 205 + some sensible mods will be within reach.#
When I say sensible mods I mean ......... Decent tyres, decent brake pads, seat, harness, service.
If you want to do a few tracks on a budget then buy a light car, easier on brakes, tyres, fuel.
Need a few more details before we can help you more I think.

I'm building a Charade GTti for the same purpose. Car cost me £250 as a non runner and buying bits off ebay. Have now got a few engines, coilovers, seat, downpipe, hybrid turbo, intercooler. Just need a cage, and a few other bits. Should be knocking on 180 brake and not much weight to haul about so should be fun.
Very easy to work on too and sound fantastic !

My thoughts would be a 205 (natch), CRX, S13 200sx, E30 325 sport, Prelude 2.2 or a Renault 19 16 valve.
The latter as it's cheaper and handles better than the Clio (unless it's a Williams of course, but even that uses suspension parts from the 19), whack the same 2 litre bottom end on, stirp it and you're laughing. Needs stripping though to get the weight down.
how about this
