Worked out that I had spent nearly 3 grand on engine mods for my £250 XR3i

Stopped counting then because I got scared!! Don't really want to work out how much I have spent on cars in total

does your total include money in from selling though. Would make the expenditure total a bit friendlier

1991 205 1.9 GTi - £1500 - sold for £1400
1992 205 1.6 GTi - £1500 - sold for £1100
1991 205 1.9 GTi Turbo Technics - £2000 - sold for £2750

Total = £5000, but that was over only 2 years. Tended to drive parents car a lot, and since 2004 have had a company car.

So total loss = .. well £250 profit actually!

Edit: added sale values

I tend to keep my cars for years and if I do sell them I get not much less than I paid for them, such as the MR2 I bought for £5700, kept for 2 years then sold it in 2003 for £5000.

Since 1991 i've only paid out approx £20k on cars and £6k of that is on my current track 205 which is worth about £4.5k. Money made back from cars if I sold the 205 now would be approx £13k, so i've only lost £7k since 91

Though uni took up many years of that time since passing my test, so I didnt own my first proper car til 97.

1988 Austin Maestro (cheap insurance ) 2000, sold for 1000 = 1000 loss
1990 Ford Sierra 4000, sold for 1400 = 1600 loss
1994 VW Corrado 9600, still got = 0 loss (until sold/scrapped)
2004 Scooby WRX PPP 16200, still got but for sale at 13,200 = poss 3000 loss

5600 lost in 15 years, not counting the Corrado, which is only worth about 1500 now (so potentially 13,700)

Hmmmmmm, interesting topic ... my first car was £320 and 8 years old ... many decades ago!!

Cars haven't really got any more expensive over all my driving years, but the cars have improved beyond all comparison .....

I reckon my bill is around £150,000+ ......... and maybe £100,000 in sales??

I have even owned cars that have INCREASED in value!!

I wasn't looking forward to working this out but it's actually ok!

astra mk 3 bought for £3400 sold for £2200
mondeo bought for £2500 sold for £900
civic vti bought for £5500 sold for £3600
bmw 325 bought for £3350 sold for £2700
integra type r bought for £6500 (current car - potential value ~6k)

Thats in 6 years since passing my test so £21250 spent, and £9400 recovered with a further potential 6k if i sold my teg.

£1000 a year average loss in depreciation isn't bad actually.

New VTS bought for £10,700 and sold for £7500
3yo MY99 Impreza Turbo bought for £11,200 sold for £7,300
6yo Peugeot 406 V6 bought for £1,900 then blown up, made about £250 back so far
5yo Peugeot 406 V6 bought for £2,250 then blow up, looking at getting £300 for in next week
2003 S2000 bought for £19,000 and still running

Total loss on cars in 5 years = £10,500 aprox. (that doesn't include S200 which has lost about £1k already).

£2k a year! Is that good/bad or indifferent?! Seems pretty grim

Add up how much modifications and insurance has cost you over the years too if you haven't quite had a heart attack yet!!!

I have not changed my car for the last 4 years and will carry on driving my F2 daily and my M3 at weekends until I get bored.....as this title has pointed out for some, I am tired of losing so much money. Funny thing is my M3 is the car Ive spent most on ever but will prolly be the one I lose least on.

Vauxhall Astra 1.3 - bought for £1000 (sold (£1000)
Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6 - 2600 (1400)
Ford Mondeo 1.8 - 6000 (3800)
Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 - 7000 (2600)
Ford Mondeo 2.0 - 8000 (2400)
Subaru Impreza Turbo - 10500 (7900)
Golf GTTDi - 7800 (7000)
Hyundai Coupe - 6000 (6250)
BMW 323 - 6500 (7000)
Renault Laguna - 10500 (6000)

Over ten years, spent 65100 and recouped 45350. Average spend of 1975 a year, not too bad I suppose. I thought it would be higher

Ok here is my revised list with insurance and mods.

astra mk 3 bought for £3400 sold for £2200 paid £700 insurance (1.5 yr)
mondeo bought for £2500 sold for £900 paid £1250 insurance (1 yr)
civic vti bought for £5500 sold for £3600 paid £3000 insurance (2yr)
bmw 325 bought for £3350 sold for £2700 paid £800 insurance (1yr)
integra type r bought for £6500 (current car - potential value ~6k) paid £850 insurance

So now approx £6000 lost allowing for value of current car and £6600 insurance. Onbly modification I have ever done was a set of alloys for my mondeo, bought for £100 sold for £100 when I sold the car.

£12600 spent on insurance and depreciation in 6 years doesn't look so good! I can't see me spending 4 figure sums on insurance again though it's just madness.
