I love the look of them as well, awesome looking, but totally impractical as a only car.
Would love to have one in the garage for weekends.

Calling Dazza'sSTi
He's just sold his STi8 to make way for one
Went down for a test in one with him a couple of months ago.
By far the fastest, most outrageous thing I've EVER been in.

After having seen JC get his face ripped off, I think I'd love one. Problem is, they're unbelievably impractical - no windscreen FFS! I need a higher disposable income to be able to spend 20-30k on something like that, I'm afraid...

There are some second hand examples knocking round for circa 15k, try www.pistonheads.com.
There was one at Oulton the other day and it was lapping bloody quickly, and looked like he was enjoying it.
There should probs be some more coming on the market in the next few weeks / months, as this time of year really isn't ideal. Having said that there was an article in top gear mag a couple of months ago where they drove one right up towards the arctic circle! Might be worth you picking a back issue copy up Deep

Thanks. A friend of mine came around last weekend with his Lotus 340R. Great fun to drive. Has a windscreen but no roof! Just got me wondering how it compares to other 'trackday toys' ie Caterfields, Ariels etc

They were motorcyle engined, now they use Honda VTEC engines.
I own 50% of one that's for sale on Pistonheads right now, next toy is on order so please buy it and we can then pay for it!

Ariels have never had motorcycle engines ! The Mark 1 has the K-Series 1.8 Rover engine (120-190 bhp). The Mark 2 has the Honda Civic type S engine in lowest form (160bhp version) and the type R engine thereafter, in various states of tune (220, 245, 275 and 300 bhp).
I plan to buy a 220bhp in the winter when hopefully a few come available as I dont really want a k-series version.

It would have to be a trackday car or a full helmet on the road.
Can you imagine driving it down the motorway and a truck flicks up a large stone into your mush

Apologies....there has never been a bike powered Ariel Atom. It's the same mistake actually made by an article in Octane Magazine - I think by Jay Leno.
And yes a helmet on all occasions is necessary i think.

I would consider a Caterham too. The Atom is cool, but its a 100% dry weather car. You wont find many local owners either, however with a Caterham there will be a very active local branch of the Lotus 7 Club to help you out if you have a problem (and build it )
I considered buying a Caterham in 1999, attended a few local meetings and got my first one in September 2000. Now on my fourth one, pushing >400+bhp/ton. You also have the option of aeroscreen for summer and winscreen and wipers for winter.
Check out www.blatchat.com or www.seventorque.com
The caterham will be ok in a shower - or even rain (as there is a hood), it has a boot which will hold an overnight bag etc and the chassis are made by the same company who makes the Atom (Arch Motorsport).
