Default Toyota MR2 Roadster Turbo conversions!

Just had a sit in a new MR2 Roadster, quite nice if maybe a little underpowered, however the sales guy said Toyota do a turbo conversion for these at a cost of 3k has anyone heard of this?

I asked the parts guy and he knew nothing about it but the sales guy was adament.

He also said it might be possible to fit the cam from the Celica 190 into one of these.

One of these with nigh on 200 bhp and a 990kg kerbweight does sound a giggle though!

Search for TTE, Toyota Team Europe, they make the official go-faster bits.

You can buy a few bolt on kits, but found a place where you can get them direct from japan for 286000 yen which is around 1300 quid.

It was amazed when this sales guy said Toyota are start doing an official turbo conversion but unfortunately only when you buy a brand new one and order it from the outset, does anyonme know about this official conversion from Toyota??

Here's one in Portuguese (Scroll down, mainly in English)

http://www.mr2clubportugal.com/index...&id=9&Itemid=2

It says you need to go to Germany to get it fitted.

Gain 44cv (184cv at 6500rpm) and 85NM (255NM at 3500rpm)

0-100kmh em 5,9 sec
Consumos de 8,9l/100 km
Top speed: 228kmh

3 yr guarantee

And halfway down is a fact sheet.

Unsure of the actual physical block

But the 190 has different bore and stroke so different crank and pistons as well as the heads, cams etc.....

So I'd be quite confident in saying no

This seems almost too cheap,

http://www.power-enterprise.co.jp/

go to 'English' and then 'Turbo's and Superchargers' and then 'MR-S'

works out (unless i've got my sums wrong) under £1400 for the kit!!

Well not well up on these engines, but what i've looked into recently another route is a full exaust system and a 'Unichip' which takes it upto the 160bhp mark, ok wont set the world alight but will be extreley nippy in a car that weighs less than a ton!

Have a look on the MR2 Roadster Owners Club. Stacks of info on the various turbo conversions available and talk of the TTE one which is coming soon and is rumoured to be nearer 6K with warranty and stuff.

Mine is still standard (apart from the TTE springs) and it gives enough power for some low speed fun

Thinking of selling my '04 plate soon if you are interested

Errr, dunno yet. Haven't advertised it anywhere yet and not really thought through a price.

Quick details : Silver '04 plate (bought in March or April 2004), red cloth, TTE springs, 13.5k on the clock. Bought with aircon and hardtop pack. Other mods are just the stereo, and a switch to stop the aerial going up all the time!!!

I've got the blistering alloys which I need to let the dealer know about. This is a known issue which should mean I get a new set of alloys Some minor stone chips and light scratches which shouldn't take much to sort

I'll try and find and/or take some pics and think of a price If you want, PM me your budget so we're thinking same ballpark.

I think he's talking out his back side

Although not physically having taken the cam cover off on a 190 engine (yet), I know a 190 engine has an extra set of cam lobes and rockers which give the extra lift and "race cam" profile at 6000+rpm. Very much like the Vetec. Even if the cam did fit the MR2 engine, it wouldn't be able to switch from the 1st to the 2nd set of cam lobes - as it needs the 190 rockers, oil feeds and actuators to make it work (i.e cylinder head and ECU).

It would be like fiiting a Vtec cam into a non Vtec engine- it just wouldn't work.

Yeah your right mate, i had a look last night, not just a case of a different cam, it would mean a complete engine change at the very least

They have done this in Japan (after market). I have a video of a MR-2 with the 190 engine in it racing a 200sx and doing very well!

Well i've been looking into this further and a cheaper (temporary) option would be to fit a H&S Exhaust, a inlet pipe, a TRD filter and a Unichip - apparently this will give 155-160bhp!!! Ok does not sound much but will give the lightweight Toyota a sub 7 sec 0-60, be like a go kart on steroids
