What do people reckon on this then? 420 BHP, 4wd. Will this one have more feel/feedback that other sporty Audis haven't?

ps it has about 400nm of torque. Whats that in lbs/ft?

i know of one thats for sale now, just had new turbos fitted to it too, if you're interested i'll find out more about it.

I know that the old S4 was 2.7 V6 twin turbo and the newer one was 4.2 V8, so what is the difference between the S4 4.2 V8 and the RS4 4.2 V8?

How do they squeeze another 75bhp out of what appears to be the same lump? (4163cc V8)

Sorry, should have been more precise. I meant the new NA V8 RS4.

I've not seen the Autocar article but I find it difficult to believe the current M3 is a better drivers car than the RS4. The M3 is down 80 BHP to the Audi, though I know its not all about power.

I find it unhelpful that rags describe rwd cars that slide their **** in the rain and will not move in the snow as drivers cars. Thats not my idea of a drivers road car.

Is there a good Audi RS bbs?

ps as a side note; has there ever been a RS model that has depreciated badly?

Audi dropped the turbos on the new s4 and rs4 so they are now normally aspirated, I had the m3 e46 for a while and they are extremely tail happy, and pathetic in the rain, but they are ***** out and rev for ever, and a good day you can have a lot of fun and the engine noise is great, but its the UK so RS4 every time, if you have the funds ger yourself the RS6 something I am looking at myself, 4.2 twin turbo, easily chipped to 500bhp +

Problem with the RS6 is that its meant to have poor steering feedback and ride quality. I'm wondering whether the RS4 might give big power, 4wd traction with little bit more M5 type driver feedback?

Had an 02 52 PLATE M5 E39 about a year ago, and I rate the M3 better DRIVERS CAR, the RS6 is the one, otherwise I would not be looking at it

By all accounts the new RS4 has more feel through the steering, brakes, gearshift etc. They've remapped the 4WD system to 35/65 front/rear split. Audi has gone to great length to make the RS4 and all RS models after this more driver orientated cars. As now seems normal practices in car's these days, it has a sport button, that once pressed changes all sorts of things........ most importantly of course the seats. They bolster up holding you more in place. If you have seen pics of the seats, they look the dogs bollox.
My old man's had one on order for months. It's due sometime in December. Can't wait. Obviously I get to drive his car's too. It will be interesting to see how it performs against my 05 STi PPP. The race is on !!!

Its interesting that coming from a M5 you feel a RS6 is the one when most rags comment on its lack of driver appeal. Can you expand?

The new RS4 will not be made in limited numbers like the previous model. This is not likely to be good for residuals.

There was an S4 vs M3 in the wet article in Autocar a while back and the M3 was quicker.

Hopefully the RS4 should redress that by more power and more rear torque.

The new RS4 appears to be about 1.5 sec quicker to 200km/h than the M3, 0.4 secs of which is gained in the 0-100km/h. Uncertain how much of this difference would be seen by an ordinary driver with slow gearshifts compared with an SMG (since the RS4 is only in manual form at launch). That 1.1 sec advantage on a roll might halve with a typical driver manual shifting versus SMG.

Once the Autocar review came out and the lack of limited production was confirmed I went and did the deal on a used M3 SMG (a new one I was advised would be a huge depreciation risk at present with a new model in 2007), as the only other contenders were a new RS4 or a new 2.5 STI with mods as my next daily driver.

Interesting on the Audi site.

I was underwhelmed by the M3 initially. Driving it more I still think the steering feel is hyped, but the performance on two others seems better than the first example. I realised I could never replace the acceleration of my old classic with any near standard new car that was sensible money and could be used daily, but weighing up the new car options I couldn't think of much else that would fit what I need better than the M3 given the choices above. I also didn't want to wait until the new RS4, which was partly forced since the Scooby's headgaskets have started oozing again. Realistically I know the 2.5 Scooby is only reliable and lag free to about 380-400 BHP, and that in a shell that weighs the same as an M3 didn't really seem enough of a difference when I fancied the rest of the package the German stuff does so much better. At least the body control/damping on the M3 seems very good compared with other German stuff.

Also planning to fix the headgaskets and keep the Subaru for a while. It may be that I need the adrenaline hit it will give, or I may not be sad to see it go depending on how the M3 stacks up after the initial fun has worn off.

I am going from personal experience, take the rs4 and the rs6 for a test drive and you will see. I have had quite a few cars in my time, 2 x subaru's, 2 x skylines r33 gtr vspec, e46 m3, e39 m5, xk8, xkr, 2 x b3 alpina's, b10 v8 e39 alpina, lexus sc430 and quite a few more, and to be honest I am driving a subaru sti ppp at the moment, and normally I would be bored by now and had moved on. I bought the subaru while waiting for a certain type of car to come to the UK, which I have now been told will be next year, hence the reason I am now looking at the RS6


The best thing is forget what persons tell you and go try for yourselve, everyone at BMW raved about the M5 hence I chopped my M3 in for one and within a week I wondered what the hell have I done, the M5 lasted just over a month, eventually chopping it in and losing £4,000, they also rated the m5 above the alpina b10 v8 and the B10 was a much better car, "but that is just my opinion, people will argue the opposite, but normally these guys have normally never sat in one let aloned owned one.
The RS6, the chap that owns the company that sold me the skylines, had one and I was impressed, but at that time they were £50,000+ and out of my budget

Deep - a serious post. Earlier you advised someone about your C43, and said it was an excellent fast cruiser, but don't expect any thrills, and that was why you bought it (or words to that effect). I vaguely got the impression the Audi would be the same. Do you see a hierarchy between the three (Audi /Merc /BMW), or do you not want something TOO dull, or are you after something more interesting this time?

JB, why did you think it wasn't going to be a limited run?

Brendan, I've loved my time in the AMG, its actually the car I've kept the longest. When I change it I'd like something similar but with better handling/steering/traction. That may give a slight trade off in comfort. The M5 is too expensive and ugly. New M3 is 2 years away. CLS AMG has been written up well but will probably be a little too soft.
So was wondering whether the RS4 might just fit the bill. Problem is trying to get a test drive will be murder. Am I prepared to order one without driving it first? No, simply because Audi has got it wrong before. Even more worrying is that the DSG version will probably come out in a years time and may well make the manual undesirable and hence hit values.

Deep, a few RS246 posts and a motor trade specialist who decided to postpone his new order when he heard this. It may be untrue. Remember how Subaru arsed up the P1 numbers and BMW recently had a disaster with the CSL.

I'm due to change my M3 next March, and will be looking at the RS4 as a replacement.

I want something that blends the build quality, luxury levels and performance of the M3 with the practicality of 4 wheel drive.

In the past I've always found the Audi S4's a little bland and not as aggressive looking as the M3, but the RS4 has definitely caught my eye. The interior looks the part as well...
